Quote of the Week
"Did the phone replace the human voice? No, the phone is an augmentation device. The cognitive revolution will allow computers to amplify the capacity of the human mind in the same manner. Just as machines made human muscles a thousand times stronger, machines will make the human brain a thousand times more powerful."
- Sebastian Thrun

A digital revolution in health care is speeding up

The Economist

This is mainly an overview of digital trends in health care from the Economist. Because of this, a lot of the information will be obvious to folks, although there are some interesting frameworks (like the "three types of players" framework that investor Andy Richards mentions).

Why Today's Digital Health Venture Model Is Broken

Matthew Karls - HIT Consultant

An interesting take on what's broken in digital health investing. According to Matthew Karls, the generalist/tech investors messed things up when they couldn't provide the same level of support as more specialist investors. His focus is on providing a more collaborative approach to venture investing in the space that has been lacking in the recent boom. The venture fund he's starting as a collaboration between Cambia and Mosaic will be an interesting one to follow.

The next horizon of innovation for pharma

Martin Dewhurst - Mckinsey Insights

This is an interview between McKinsey partner, Martin Dewhurst, and VC David Epstein. The conversation ranges from current innovations, to how pharmaceutical firms should be responding to the rapid rate of change in the industry, as well as some general insights into the progress of the pharma industry. In particular, I was interested in Epstein's comments on how the commercial model in pharma will change. He feels much of it will need to remain the same (educating physicians, etc). In my mind, much of this will be fundamentally different as physicians become more digital and we have new ways of educating targeted groups of care takers.

A.I. versus M.D.

Siddhartha Mukherjee - The New Yorker

You can put this in your "long reads" folder. It's a pretty in depth read, but does a good job showing the human side of diagnosis and how we are shifting towards machines to take on some of these human tasks. People have been talking about this for decades, we may now be close to the reality through neural networks and machine learning. The piece also goes into Sebastian Thrun's work in this area.
