Quote of the Week "Americans are largely unaware of the outsized role that public health plays in making their lives better and longer. Researchers from Brigham Young University found that adults believe about 80% of increased life expectancy is due to medical advances and clinical care. The truth is that public health has been a secret success story, providing 25 years of the 30 year increase in life expectancy since 1900."

Personally, the bill seems bananas to me (which isn't to say the ACA is perfect). I cannot wrap my head around how it makes sense to base insurance tax breaks on age instead of income... read more here. | | Vanessa Mason, MPH - FastCo Vanessa Mason came out with another Op-Ed on the importance of funding public health. I couldn't agree more with her points, and the article brings up some interesting statistics around the importance of the issue. | | Diane Mulcahy - HBR "The ACA is critical to the continued growth of the gig economy because it separates the ability to obtain health insurance from the need to hold a traditional full-time job. It gives all independent workers — consultants, contractors, freelancers, part-time, and on-demand workers — a way to obtain health insurance coverage without relying on an employer. Today, 20%–40% of the workforce works independently, and that share is only projected to grow." | | Kevin W. Smith, Anupa Bir, Nikki L. B. Freeman, Benjamin C. Koethe, Julia Cohen and Timothy J. Day - Health Affairs Interesting findings from a study in Health Affairs that focused on innovations in CMS Innovation Awards. In particular, "using meta-regression, we assessed the effects on costs of five common components of these innovations. Innovations that used health information technology or community health workers achieved the greatest cost savings. Savings were also relatively large in programs that targeted clinically fragile patients—clinically complex populations at risk for disease progression. While the magnitude of these effects was often substantial, none achieved conventional levels of significance in our analyses." | | Bessemer Ventures and Oxeon The Bessemer/Oxeon podcast reviews some of the trends they're saw at HIMSS this year, and talk to Lee Shapiro and Jay Desai on what they are seeing on the floor of HIMSS (especially in light of the new administration in the US). Enjoy! | | Healthcare Growth Partners If you're wondering what your company might grab in an M&A deal, look no further than this overview of Health IT valuations by subsector. Pretty interesting finding, and fairly easy to implement. | | SVHealth - SVHealth 2.0 The Silicon Valley Health 2.0 group invites you to come to their next chapter meeting, which will take place on Tuesday, March 21st.
