3D Printing

March 03, 2017

What's up?

A bit of downsizing going on my end. Our CEO is moving to Bali, so it'll just be me in San Diego.

I work out of a cool co-working space in Downtown and all I have (thankfully) is one desk, some books, a 3D Printer and a laptop (plus a lot of Sriracha sauce).

As you know, I am a documentary whore, so just in case you like documentaries, I want to recommend one of my absolute favorite(s).

It's called The Up Series -- It's a longitudinal study/documentary that keeps re-visiting the same group of people over and over again and comparing their current life with what they expected out of life when they were 7 years old. The first installment of the documentary was called 7 Up (because they were interviewed at 7 years old), and the last documentary was 56 Up (because they were interviewed at 56 years old).

It'll just go on till everyone dies. It's an incredibly fascinating documentary on the human condition, how difficult it is to change and how initial conditions (like socio-economic conditions) take you in a completely different trajectory.

Alright, alright... you say, "..What the hell does any of this have to do with 3D Printing?"

It doesn't.

So, let's get to it.

Today, we'll be covering:

1.) How to 3D Print a house in 24 hours for less than $10k
2.) A guy from Sydney trying to sell guns
3.) 3D Printing ponzi schemes on crowdfunding sites
4.) How 3D Printing was used in the oscars
5.) Building a business from 3D Printing pens
7.) A short history of 3D Printing
8.) Some crowdfunding campaigns
9.) A couple of companies getting some investments
10.) Experiments in full color 3D Printing

That's about it ;)

Until next time, my friend,
Dilanka

[NEWS] - Someone 3D Printed a house in 24 hours for less than $10K

Lacy Cook - inhabitat.com

I obviously cannot confirm how comfortable this dwelling is, but if it is even remotely functional, it's impressive. What I don't understand is why these folks won't take advantage of Buckminster Fuller's Geodesic domes as an initial structure for a house. As far as I know, it's one of the most effective/efficient and stable structures we know of. For example, check this video out.

[NEWS] - Sydney man tried to sell 3D-printed gun for AU$1m

Tas Bindi - zdnet.com

Just a few weeks ago I mentioned that we are only going to see more and more stories like this. Remember, never attempt to sell a 3D Printed gun on social media -- it's covered in chapter 1 on "How to be a Criminal 101." Strangely, a lot of these stories seems to be clustered in Australia. Not sure if this is because of the intensely strict gun control laws OR if the criminals are simply too stupid.

[NEWS] - Crowdfunding Sites Have Become a Wild-West Ponzi Scheme

3DPrinting.com - 3dprinting.com

Good read.

[NEWS] - How 3D Printing was used to make the Oscars

Beau Jackson - 3dprintingindustry.com

Interesting stuff -- Well, not as interesting as the Moonlight/La La Land screw up.

[NEWS] - From Kickstarter to a $20M Business with 3D Printing Pens

Amy Feldman - forbes.com

Interesting story. By the way, if you are too much of a rebel to turn off your AdBlocker for Forbes, here's a snapshot of the article: page 1, page 2

[NEWS] - Who is responsible for 3D Printing technologies?

Capucine Lonjon - sculpteo.com

A bit of history never hurts.

[INDIEGOGO] - Helping the youngest infants adapt to prosthetics

indiegogo.com - Indiegogo

Interesting project by a father who is making 3D Printed/hydraulic prosthetics for young amputees. If you are interested in this project, check it out.

[NEWS] - BeeHex raises $1M to 3D Print Pizzas

Lora Kolodny - techcrunch.com

We've seen pancake printers and candy printers that were interesting but didn't even come close to raising $1M for their SEED round -- yet, here we have a (allegedly) PIZZA 3D Printer company (called BeeHex) that has raised a $1M. This better produce some damn good pizza with minimal human interaction.

[INDUSTRY] - Polymaker receives $5M funding

Sam Davies - tctmagazine.com

FYI, Polymaker is a 3D Printing materials manufacturer and it appears that they've gotten ANOTHER (I believe the last cash infusion was $3M in 2015) cash injection.

[COMPANY] - Experiments in full color 3D Printing

General Fabb - solidsmack.com

Very interesting.
