Quote of the Week
"Did the phone replace the human voice? No, the phone is an augmentation device. The cognitive revolution will allow computers to amplify the capacity of the human mind in the same manner. Just as machines made human muscles a thousand times stronger, machines will make the human brain a thousand times more powerful."
- Sebastian Thrun

A digital revolution in health care is speeding up

The Economist

This is mainly an overview of digital trends in health care from the Economist. Because of this, a lot of the information will be obvious to folks, although there are some interesting frameworks (like the "three types of players" framework that investor Andy Richards mentions).

Why Today's Digital Health Venture Model Is Broken

Matthew Karls - HIT Consultant

An interesting take on what's broken in digital health investing. According to Matthew Karls, the generalist/tech investors messed things up when they couldn't provide the same level of support as more specialist investors. His focus is on providing a more collaborative approach to venture investing in the space that has been lacking in the recent boom. The venture fund he's starting as a collaboration between Cambia and Mosaic will be an interesting one to follow.

The next horizon of innovation for pharma

Martin Dewhurst - Mckinsey Insights

This is an interview between McKinsey partner, Martin Dewhurst, and VC David Epstein. The conversation ranges from current innovations, to how pharmaceutical firms should be responding to the rapid rate of change in the industry, as well as some general insights into the progress of the pharma industry. In particular, I was interested in Epstein's comments on how the commercial model in pharma will change. He feels much of it will need to remain the same (educating physicians, etc). In my mind, much of this will be fundamentally different as physicians become more digital and we have new ways of educating targeted groups of care takers.

A.I. versus M.D.

Siddhartha Mukherjee - The New Yorker

You can put this in your "long reads" folder. It's a pretty in depth read, but does a good job showing the human side of diagnosis and how we are shifting towards machines to take on some of these human tasks. People have been talking about this for decades, we may now be close to the reality through neural networks and machine learning. The piece also goes into Sebastian Thrun's work in this area.

3D Printing - Startup Digest - Crowdfunding Extravaganza! Extra! Extra! - March 31st - April 7th

Startup Digest

3D Printing

March 31, 2017

Hey you!

Last week, I asked you whether you preferred NO EMAIL as opposed to OLD RESOURCES in the event that there was not much happening in the world of 3D Printing.

Most of you (thankfully) preferred NO EMAIL.

I know the velocity and volume of information that comes at you is INSANE and the last thing I want to do is send you more garbage.

If you'd like to be more effective in how you deal with information, try reading/listening to Thank you for being late by Thomas Friedman

(thanks to Forrest Burton, a reader, for the recommendation!)

If you don't have time to read/listen to the book, you can watch this lecture to get the gist of it.

Anyway, today, we'll be covering:

1.) Saving a 100+ year old car with 3D Printing (be sure to watch the video)
2.) Helping visually impaired (expectant) parents with 3D Printing
3.) Theories about the future of manufacturing in America
4.)  Recap of the Midwest Rep Rap Festival
5.) Makerbot's MinFill in action
6.) A whole bunch of crowdfunding campaigns related to 3D Printing

Phew! I was surprised to see THIS many crowdfunding campaigns related to 3D Printing.

Nothing major (except the castle) -- just a bunch of small scale, highly targeted Kickstarters.

That's all for today.

Thanks for reading :)
Until next time, my friend,
Dilanka

P.S: Feel free to hit reply if you want to chat or suggest something

CONTEMPLATION:
"..Each morning when I open my eyes I say to myself: I, not events, have the power to make me happy or unhappy today. I can choose which it shall be. Yesterday is dead, tomorrow hasn't arrived yet. I have just one day, today, and I'm going to be happy in it..." - Groucho Marx

[STORY] - The 103-Year-Old Grand Prix Car Saved by a 3D Printer

Fiona Pepper - abc.net.au

One of the coolest case studies I've seen this year.

[STORY] - Blind Parents Get to See Their Baby Thanks to 3D Printing

GE Healthcare - newsroom.gehealthcare.com

One of the coolest applications of 3D Printing in my opinion.

[STORY] - What American Manufacturing Looks like in the Trump Era

Patrick Gillepsie - money.cnn.com

Voodoo has been getting some decent press lately -- although I have yet to see a working prototype of their claims.

I think 3D Printing has the potential to have much more unexpected implications than this article suggests though. For example, supply chain disruption where truck drivers aren't needed because people just print their own widgets etc..Who knows. Only time will tell.

[RECAP] - Midwest Rep Rap Festival

Brian Benchoff - hackaday.com

The Midwest Rep Rap festival is a 3D Printing related geek gathering that happens in the middle of nowhere (Goshen, Indiana) and it just ended. Here's a decent recap of the event.

I attended last year, but didn't attend this year.

[ARTICLE] - A Case Study in Makerbot's Minfill

General Fabb - fabbaloo.com

Good commentary on Minfill (which I mentioned a couple of weeks ago).

[INDIEGOGO] - T-1000, Self Leveling Vat 3D Printer

Indiegogo - indiegogo.com

Interesting crowdfunding project. Speaking of crowdfunding, I am also working on a crowdfunding project that I will be announcing in a month or so.

[COMPANY] - ONO Releasing Kickstarter Product(s)

ONO 3D - ono3d.net

ONO released a press release recently announcing that they'd started delivering product from their Kickstarter campaign. Reading through their Kickstarter, it seems like the press release is more of a public relations move to buy more time than actually deliver the product to the backers.

Perhaps I am wrong. Any ideas?

[KICKSTARTER] - HexBay, X-Wing Minatures Storage Solution

Jean-Noel Seneque - kickstarter.com

This is an active Kickstarter for storing your X-wing fighters efficiently. Interesting to see design work getting crowdfunding support.

[KICKSTARTER] - A 3D Printed Desktop Robotic Arm, Based on Arduino, for Hobbyists and Education at all Levels

Slant Robotics - kickstarter.com

This Kickstarter will be over by the time you read it -- but it's still interesting.

[KICKSTARTER] - 3D Printing a Castle for $1m

Mike Draghici - kickstarter.com

This one is a bit more ambitious. Considering the random nature of the Internet, I wouldn't be surprised if things like this get funded.

[KICKSTARTER] - 3D Printed Titanium Ballpoint Pen

Mike Smoothy - kickstarter.com

This project will also be over by the time you read it. In either case, it's still an interesting project.

[KICKSTARTER] - A Tripod System Designed to Hold Mobile Devices for Your Home or Office.

Shayne Poindexter - kickstarter.com

I am glad someone has made this particular product. It's a pain in the ass to find a good multi-purpose tripod for your phone these days.

[KICKSTARTER] - The First Fully Compatible, Effective, Plug-and-Play and Affordable Filtering Solution for Your 3D Printers.

Zimple - kickstarter.com

One of the more interesting Kickstarters. It's a filtering system to minimize/eliminate toxic fumes released by 3D Printers. A while back, I mentioned about UL teaming up with a university to conduct independent studies on this same topic. Can't wait for those results.

[COMPANY] - Another 3D Printing Startup Bites the Dust: Sources Say SOLS Quietly Shut Down Operations Last Year

Fast Company - fastcompany.com

Can't confirm or deny any of these claims by the way.

Developer - Startup Digest - Developer Communities - March 31st - April 7th

Startup Digest

Developer

March 31, 2017

In this weekly issue, there are more reasons and resources to create developer communities than there are excuses not to. Depending on your location in the world and your willingness to learn or teach development, the opportunities are almost endless. Please don't just take my word for it, check it out for yourselves. This part of the weekly issue was inspired by
Jesse Casman, a developer subscriber. Thank you, Jesse.

If you are looking for a mentor to assist in enhancing your development skills, Jeff Goins has a handle on it in this article. If you are learning how to code, Pluralsight has course and a paid mentorship programs to assist that can assist students how to code.

If you have something that you would like to comment about or give advice, would be greatly appreciated.

Have a great rest of the week!

14 Programming Communities for Developers, Hackers

Alex - CodeCondo

Your choice of programming communities (know as: discussion boards, forums, bulletin boards, etc,.) will often determine the pace of your progression in your particular language that you're learning. I don't think there is an answer as to why, but real-time communities provide a one of a kind learning experience.

Why should a developer have a mentor?

Kamil Lelonek - Medium

It may sound hard but it's relatively easy. Just ask for a mentorship! Can you be rejected? Of course. Nothing happens without trying. However, there are a few ways to convince someone to mentor you.
