Quote of the Week "And so, we find ourselves in 2016 using the very latest stopwatches and journals to figure out just how bad our technology problem is. The very idea that we're measuring 21st century technological performance with 19th century technology — the clipboard and stopwatch — is a nightmare of the absurd that only health care (or possibly Terry Gilliam) could conjure up."

Scott Munro at scott.munro@startupdigestmail.com | AI is shaping the future of commerce Braintree’s GM of Mobile, Aunkur Arya, sat down with Pinterest’s Head of Commerce, Michael Yamartino, to talk about how Pinterest is using AI technologies to advance the buying experience. Read about their talk, and watch a short clip, by clicking here. | Want to support diversity in tech? Throughout September, Betabrand will donate $5 from every Dress Pant Yoga Pants purchase to the Techstars Foundation, a nonprofit working to improve diversity in technology entrepreneurship. | | Nan Li - Medium Nan Li from Obvious Ventures has a great piece here on market opportunities for AI in healthcare. We've been seeing some big players in the space for some time (most notably IBM Watson), but the opportunities are still plentiful. This is definitely a great read to start thinking about how entrepreneurs and investors should think about the market. | | Jonathan Bush - STAT The ever-eccentric Jonathan Bush wrote this piece for STAT on an issue I'm sure we are all familiar with: physician fatigue with EHRs. While this is a fairly popular topic, I find it interesting to see what Mr. Bush has to say, and how he is changing Athena health's corporate culture to try to be part of the solution, instead of the problem. | | Brian W. Powers, AB; Scott Rinefort, MBA; Sachin H. Jain, MD, MBA - JAMA A great study in JAMA on the emerging use of services such as Lyft and Uber to provide nonemergency medical transportation. This issue is actually more complicated than it might seem, as many hospitals are barred from providing such services to patients, and many payers have not yet caught onto their benefit. As the study points out, Uber and Lyft have begun to partner with medical transportation companies to see how they can increase the efficiencies of such services. | | Ann M. Thayer - Chemical & Engineering News As many know, the "super bug" epidemic is becoming a real issue globally. We can no longer find antibacterial drugs fast enough, or cheap enough, to keep up with the growing resistance of so-called "super bugs". This piece is a good deep dive into the issue, along with the current state of research on new antibacterial compounds. | | Philip Scott - Digitalhealth.net If you haven't yet heard of FHIR (fast healthcare interoperability resources), then definitely read this overview of the global interoperability standard. This goes into detail on the history, and future of the promising standard for health data exchange. I have my doubts on the speed at which firms will be adopting this standard without government regulation; nevertheless, this is a good (if slightly technical) read. | | | You are receiving this email because you believe that the best startup articles and videos are made by active members of the startup community.
