Quote of the Week "Over the next decade, developing countries will need to spend billions on healthcare infrastructure and services. Advancements in technology must be considered with these investments. Where urgent needs prevail in emerging markets with limited access to healthcare, the learnings from costly EHR implementations in development markets must be considered to determine a more affordable path forward. Similarly to how wireless solutions have allowed developing countries to leapfrog fixed line infrastructure investments for broadband access, emerging markets need to consider innovative EHR solutions that will allow them to leap towards improved healthcare that is more affordable."

This piece looks over some folks in the "Pro" DNDi camp and some folks in the "Con" DNDi camp. The debate over the efficiency of for-profit R&D is highly complex; however, my hope is that as our understanding of genetics and human models increases, we will be able to drastically decrease R&D costs regardless of the "profit" interests that fueled the discovery. | | David McKeering - PwC Innovations in healthcare are not, and should not, be a first world issue alone. This PwC report goes into healthcare trends in emerging markets, specifically in APAC. Between growing prevalence of diseases such as diabetes, aging populations, and growing middle classes, APAC will be ever more attractive as a market for digital health and health tech companies moving forward. Even more generally, emerging markets will grow their share of global healthcare spend in the coming years. Check out more stats and insights in the report. | | Heather Mack - Mobihealth News Pediatric sedation is a real issue for emergency medicine (and many other sub specialties) because different children can react very differently to dosing levels and drug types. This study found that iPads could be an effective alternative to traditional sedation (in this case midazolam). Read more about it here. | | Gallup - Gallup Despite all the debate over the impact of the ACA, here are more early results that seem to show a glimmer of hope. Note: I am not saying the ACA has been a success; but, according to Gallup, not only are we at a record low in terms of uninsured individuals, but more interestingly the legislation seems to have helped individuals to pay for care. As Gallup notes, "The percentage of U.S. adults who say they were unable to afford healthcare or medicines for themselves or their families at some point in the past 12 months is also at a record low after nearly eight years of Obama's presidency." | | Startup Health - Startup Health "Artificial intelligence and predictive analytics company Hindsait is harnessing the power of AI and predictive analytics and using machine-learning techniques to analyze data to transform healthcare.
