Quote of the Week
"There are few sectors as resistant to change as government and health care. We count on their stability. But I have seen those two millstones grind a great idea down to powder. I've also seen initiatives flourish and grow, nurtured on the strong platform that this agency provides.

Innovators need sustained, courageous commitment from the top. We need a culture of experimentation that embraces risk and recognizes that failure is not only an option, but is likely within the safe setting of a lab like ours. And we need to ensure that anyone who sees a problem can research, prototype, and test a solution."
- Susannah Fox, CTO, HHS

How mobile commerce really works

Americans are now doing almost 33% of their online shopping on mobile devices. But what happens when you click “buy” isn’t as simple as it seems. A lot has to happen at lightning speed, with ironclad security, for mobile commerce to work. Check out this infographic, which lays out the entire process, by clicking here.

Technology and Health Care: The View From HHS

Laura Landro - WSJ

As CTO for the HHS, Susannah Fox has been doing an incredibly good job at making innovation and technological partnerships a priority for the HHS. Above is a WSJ interview with Susannah that goes over her approach to innovation, the future of HHS, and everything in between.

AMA: Physicians Like the Idea of Digital Health

Jeff Byers - HealthcareDIVE

Despite the AMA's recent comments regarding digital health, it seems that physicians are actually looking forward to digital innovations, per a recent AMA survey. That being said, physicians do still worry about reimbursement, data privacy, and liability. Read more above.

Has Provider M&A Rendered Existing Pharma Deployments Obsolete?

Paul Darling - ZS Associates

ZS Associates often has very good thought leadership on sales and marketing best practices in life sciences. This piece is an interesting take on how life sciences companies deploy sales and marketing assets and how they might change it based on how patients seek care. Patients often don't seek care based on zip codes or state lines (which is how sales assets are often deployed), but rather within what ZS calls local health markets. Quite an interesting take on how to map territories in more effective ways.

Over 400 Counties at Risk Following Mass Exodus of Mega-Insurers from Obamacare: Visualizing the data

Kevin Chan - The Enigma

This is some very bad news for ACA... nationwide many counties are at risk of only having 1-2 insurers to provide them with plans after many insurers are exiting exchanges. This will no doubt be devastating for consumers that are seeking health insurance from these exchanges as competition will be absolutely wiped out. Read more on the study above.

3D Printing - Startup Digest - Do It Yourself - September 30th - October 7th

Startup Digest

3D Printing

September 30, 2016

Hey you!

Nothing much interesting going down this week. Fairly quiet.

With that said, in this digest, we'll be covering:

1.) DIY Projects
2.) Mattel's delay
3.) Questionable project involving reproducing robots

I am currently reading "On The Shortness of Life" by Seneca -- it's a short book on the topic of Stoicism. Essentially, it is philosophy without mental masturbation. Check it out: https://www.amazon.com/Shortness-Life-Penguin-Great-Ideas/dp/0143036327/

Until next time my friend,

[DIY] - Open Source Prosthetic Hand

Jenik - prusahand.org

Have you heard of Prusa Hand? It's a DIY Prosthetic Hand designed by a dude named Jenik. It's very much in the same category is E-NABLE where they have crowdsourced the concept of 3D Printing prosthetic hands -- except, you can now do it on your own in your home.

[DIY] - Iron Man

When you have enough free time and a 3D Printer, this is what's possible.

[INDUSTRY] - Mattel's Thingmaker Delayed

Mattel - Mattel

Remember the Thingmaker? It's a $300 3D Printer aimed at children. We've been talking about it for quite a while. Unfortunately, it won't be coming out this year. Instead, it's been pushed to Fall of 2017 (instead of next month).

[VIDEO] - Reproducing Robots

YouTube - YouTube

Not sure if this is complete bullshit or not -- I'll let you figure that out. I was entertained enough to include it in this week's digest.

Confronting Down Rounds

Dror Futter

An overview of issues startups confront when dealing with a down round and steps startups can do to prepare.

Developing an MVP and Reaching Investors

David Cohen

"I think doing attracts investors. Talking about doing makes me think maybe you're not an entrepreneur."

How Startup Options (and Ownership) Works

Scott Kupor

"Dilution is a loaded word and tricky concept. On one hand, if a company is raising more money, it's increasing the fully diluted share count and thus "diluting" or reducing current owners' (including option-holding employees') ownership. On the other hand, raising more money helps the company execute on its potential, which could mean that everyone owns slightly less, but of a higher-valued asset."

How To Split Equity Between Co-Founders

Daniel Devoe

"It may be the simple solution, but it's not necessarily fair. And without having an honest conversation at the beginning, this "simple" solution can lead to resentment down the line when some co-founders are contributing more than others."

Understanding VCs

Fred Wilson

"If you are at a board meeting and a VC says "you should do less email marketing and more content marketing", would you go see your VP Marketing after the meeting and tell them to cut email and double down on content? I sure hope not. I hope you would treat that VC comment as a single data point, to be heard, but most likely not acted on unless you get a lot of similar feedback."

3D Printing - Startup Digest - Guns, Vinyl & Asia - September 23rd - September 30th

Startup Digest

3D Printing

September 23, 2016

Hope you are well.

As an omnivore, I have been experimenting with vegan recipes (like sprouted lentils etc.) lately. It's a tough deal to switch over, but I am slowly warming up to the benefits.

Also, I have been perusing the Greylock Partners YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/greylockpartners -- some exceptionally high quality startup related talks in there. Check it out.

Anyway, back to 3D Printing...

In this digest, we'll be covering:

1.) 3D Printing playable Vinyl records
2.) UPS Expanding to Asia
3.) The Robo3D Kickstarter
4.) New Makerbot products
5.) The Defense Distributed Gun appeal

That's about it.

As always, please hit reply if you have any comments, suggestions or if you'd like to just chat.

Until next time my friend,
Dilanka

[DIY] - 3D Printed Vinyl Record

Amanda Ghassaei - vimeo.com

This is mad cool. If you are a fan of vinyl records, this should make you giddy. It's a method to convert digital audio files into a 3D Printable record that would play on ordinary record players. Oh, and it's over 4+ years old. I LOVE this type of thing.

[INDUSTRY] - UPS Expands it's 3D Printing Services to Asia

UPS - UPS

UPS's partner Fast Radius will be opening a 3D printing factory in a UPS facility in Singapore by the end of this year, expanding the UPS on-demand 3D printing network to Asia.

[KICKSTARTER] - New Robo3D Printers

robo3D - kickstarter.com

For folks interested in 3D Printing related Kickstarters. These two printers are from Robo3D and they met their funding goal in less than 24 hours after launch! Pretty cool! Also, if you remember, last week I mentioned that Robo3D was acquired by Falcon.

[INDUSTRY] - Makerbot Releases New Products

Makerbot - makerbot.com

Makerbot announced a bunch of (surprising) new stuff this week: a new mobile app, desktop software, new materials and a few 3D Printers. It all seems to be focused on the education and the professional market. Makerbot doesn't have the greatest perception among 3D Printer owners due to their faulty hardware after the acquisition - nevertheless, this seems to be a move aimed at turning a new leaf.

[NEWS] - 3D Printable Guns Loses Appeal

Andrew Blake - washingtontimes.com

If you are unfamiliar, Austin based Defense Distributed is the main entity behind creating digital blueprints for 3D Printable guns. They lost their appeal this week. In it's split decision Tuesday, a panel of appellate court judges agreed with the State Dept. that allowing Defense Distributed to upload further blueprints would endanger national security because it would enable Americans and foreigners alike to amass untraceable guns that can be made with ease.
