Quotes of the Week
"I think that Theranos from an external perception on what people think about Silicon Valley and health care is damaging and is unfortunate; but, from an investor perspective I don't think that there is too much change because it wasn't the Bessemers. There was one Sand Hill Road investor as a seed, which was a connection through a family, and everything else was family offices. A lot of investors I know looked at it, and the moment a company that's progressing at innovation won't show you anything about how it works, you pass as an investor."
- Sean Duffy, CEO of Omada Health on Theranos and it's impact on the Digital Health investing landscape

"I'd also like to hear some evidence of how all of this big data/AI/machine learning work is resulting in actual activity to change physician and consumer behavior, particularly around improved diagnoses and avoidance of medical errors. So far most of the talk has been about technology and too little of the talk is about results. I hereby declare that the digital health theme for 2017 should be: you show me the evidence it works, I'll show you the money!"
- Lisa Suennen

2017 JP Morgan Healthcare Conference Recap

Steve Kraus - Bessemer Ventures

This is great. Bessemer just started up a new bi-weekly podcast on healthcare, hosted by Steve Kraus. The first episode is a recap of the JP Morgan Conference this year, with some great guests, and an overview of the vision for the podcast. This is a must listen/subscribe podcast moving forward for sure. Guests on this episode include journalist Chrissy Farr, Omada Health CEO Sean Duffy, and others.

If Your Digital Health Tech Works, I'll Show You the Money

Lisa Suennen - MedCity News

I love skeptics, especially digital health skeptics. In good fashion, Lisa Suennen throws a gauntlet to the digital health community: show me results, and I'll show you money. This seems like a pretty low bar to clear; however, in digital health too little time has been spent on the actual outcomes of technologies (which Lisa points out). See more of her thoughts on the subject above.

The Heroism of Incremental Care

Atul Gawande - The New Yorker

Atul Gawande, the man, the myth, the legend. His new piece in the New Yorker is about how we think about medicine as a potential cure all, a one time "heroic fix" even though most medicine is a long, excruciating process that can take years with small, incremental improvements. Technologists often think we can change anything quickly, but in health care that is generally not the case. This is a long read, but well worth it as a reminder of the long game in medicine.

John Arnold Made a Fortune at Enron. Now He's Declared War on Bad Science

Sam Apple - Wired

This is a longer piece from Wired on the Reproducibility Project and the broader move to ensure novel findings are in fact true science and can be reproduced. One pair of individuals in particular, John and Lara Arnold, are spearheading much of this movement through grants to ensure the validity of many scientific findings, which, as you can imagine, has ruffled more than a few feathers.

Cassidy-Collins, the GOP Replacement Plan That Lets Liberal States Keep Obamacare, Explained

Sarah Kliff - Vox

The entire healthcare ecosystem is trying to understand what the Trump Presidency means for the future of the ACA, and what will be replacing it. A lot of time has been devoted to repealing the health care legislation, without talk of replacement. Sarah Kliff covers one possible replacement, the Patient Freedom Act, which would be a flexible version that allows some states to keep the ACA in basically its current form. This might seem like a no brainer, but it is sadly getting some serious push back. Read more above.
