3D Printing - Startup Digest - Ahoy! - January 27th - February 3rd

3D Printing

January 27, 2017

Hey you!

Hope you are doing well.

I am still in Vegas hanging out with a bunch of incredibly smart scallywags discussing life and strategies for living effectively.

An interesting thing I learned is the Japanese art form called Kintsugi -- I found it interesting because it's a fantastic metaphor for adversity, pain and struggle that is inevitable in the human condition. The idea is to NOT hide the damage, rather, to incorporate it into the whole and create a unique entity. Quite beautiful.

As far as 3D Printing goes, we will be covering the following today:

1.) A fun DIY project
2.) MacLaren partering up with Stratasys
3.) Gravity Sketch (product)
4.) 3D Printing without supports
5.) Divergent 3D raising money
6.) Renting a 3D Printing farm
7.) Legal liability in 3D Printing

That's all for this week!

As always, if you have any tips, comments, questions or complaints, please hit reply and get in touch.

My goal with this newsletter is to provide you with the MOST VALUE in the realm of 3D Printing, and if I am not achieving that goal, we are both wasting our time :/ -- So, hit me up ;)

Until next time, my friend,
Dilanka

[DIY] - Archimedes Screw Bonanza

MakerBotLearning - thingiverse.com

I haven't included any DIY 3D Printable projects lately, so here is one. This is an Archimedes screw, which is a device that was allegedly invented by Archimedes (who was one of the most influential scientists from 3rd Century B.C.).

The idea is to be able to transport water from below ground to above ground (for irrigation, flood prevention etc..) and is still being used today. Good news is that you can 3D Print the entire thing at home :)

[NEWS] - MacLaren Racing partners with Stratasys

Stratasys - stratasys.com

MacLaren Racing recently partnered with Stratasys -- who will act as their official supplier of 3D Printed prototypes. One of the main purposes of this partnership appears to be focused on providing 3D Printing solutions in Formula 1.

[PRODUCT] - Gravity Sketch makes 3D Modeling much more intuitive

Cabe Atwell - solidsmack.com

If you have warmed up to the idea of VR, this might be of interest.

It's supposed to make 3D Modeling MUCH more intuitive and easier.

This is obviously new, so be patient -- it will only improve.

[VIDEO] - 3D Printer with Tilted Print Bed (to avoid support material)

YouTube - youtube.com

This is an interesting idea. A bunch of Swiss students have figured out a way to potentially print objects WITHOUT support material. The way this is accomplished is by tilting the bed at the moment of extrusion to remove the overhang. Very Interesting.

[NEWS] - Divergent 3D Raises $23 Million

Kirsten Korosec - fortune.com

Last week I mentioned about a 700HP Super Car that was 3D Printed (with metal) by a company called Divergent 3D. Well, turns out they just got a $23 MILLION cash infusion.

[NEWS] - Voodoo Manufacturing Raises $1.4M

Voodoo Manufacturing - voodoomfg.com

Many people use 3D Printing to start a side business and sell items on sites like Etsy.

Do you have a side business that involves 3D Printing?

If so, you might find what Voodoo Manufacturing does helpful.

Essentially, you can upload a 3D Printable design and have them print out thousands of units using their farm of 3D Printers.

They also just raised $1.4M.

[LAW] - 3D Printing and Legal Liability

Chris Mondics - philly.com

This is not a new piece, but it is still quite good. It talks about minimizing liability when it comes to 3D Printing -- written from a lawyer's perspective.
