3D Printing | January 06, 2017 | Hey you.
Hope you had a gluttonous holiday break!
I am back in San Diego grinding.
CES is going on right now, so if you are in Vegas, be sure to go check out the 3D Printing section....
There's a LOT of (allegedly) groundbreaking products being released -- but, I'll wait a bit longer before I send them to you. (I need to separate the gold from the junk).
Anyway, in this weeks digest, we will be covering:
1.) A fully 3D Printed Kayak (done by one guy by himself) 2.) A rise in 3D Printed guns in Australia 3.) How Speedo uses 3D Printing for prototyping 4.) How a ceramic craftsman uses 3D Printing 5.) Lulzbot's new upcoming product 6.) XYZ's Da Vinci Nano 7.) Pros/Cons of Rafts 8.) Mobile Face Scanning 9.) Ford investing in 3D Printing 10.) Some guy hiding 3D Printed objects in SF
That's it!
As always, let me know if I missed anything or if you have any questions.
Until next time my friend, Dilanka | Empire FinTech Conference Starting at Just $195, but Act Fast! Hear from those forging new trails in payments, blockchain, lending, robo-advising, insurance tech, real estate and more. In addition to attracting hundreds of FinTech entrepreneurs, the conference also plays host to the investors, bank innovators and service providers that help accelerate startups. You don't want to miss this - starting at just $195. | | Grassroots Engineering - youtube.com What does 42 days of 3D Printing and 58 POUNDS (~26.3kg) of ABS Plastic get you? A fully 3D Printed, functional Kayak.
You would think this was done by some big company, but you'd be wrong. It was done by ONE GUY at HOME. Instead of buying a $30,000 printer, he built his own printer with a high heat chamber so there's a zero chance of warping or cracking.
Then, each of the 28 individually 3D Printed parts are bolted together and sealed with silicone. That's it. Incredible project. | | Connie Agius - abc.net.au Interesting story about 3D Printed weapons based out of a place with some of the toughest gun laws: Australia. What's interesting is that criminals are using different 3D Printing companies to print and ship individual parts of a firearm so it can be assembled later after delivery. If you recall, Defense Distributed (out of Austin, TX) was the organization that released 3D Printable files for functional weapons. Even though they lost an appeal (which prohibited them from releasing digital files for creating weapons) -- we all know that it's impossible to prevent the propagation of these files due to demand. Good article. | | Stratasys - stratasys Good case study on how Speedo uses 3D Printing for prototyping products quickly. | | General Fabb - fabbaloo.com A good read about how a traditional ceramics craftsman was able to vastly simplify his work by using 3D Printing technology. | | lulzbot - lulzbot.com Lulzbot makes some of the best (open source) printers on the market and I look forward to this product coming out. | | Edgar Alvarez - engadget.com This was announced at CES, and is not yet released. Interesting looking product. Although, from my understanding, XYZ is full of proprietary limitation(s) and I am not a huge fan of that. If this was open source, it would be great. | | General Fabb - fabbaloo.com A good overview of the pros and cons of using Rafts when 3D Printing. | | bellus3d - bellus3d.com This is another product that was announced at CES 2017. It's not released yet, but they claim to provide high resolution 3D Scans of your face with a mobile device. If it works as advertised, the applications should be interesting. | | Donald Trump - twitter.com This tweet is merely for context. Allegedly, FORD is investing $4.5B in Michigan (instead of Mexico) for their new plant. Their budget also includes investing in industrial 3D Printing technologies by Stratasys. I couldn't find an official press release by Ford (yet), but I'll be sure to send it your way when I find a credible source to confirm all of those claims. | | illiterit - Reddit.com Entertaining game where a redditor decided to hide hundreds of 3D Printed objects for random pedestrians to find. Amusing. | | | You are receiving this email because you believe that the best startup articles and videos are made by active members of the startup community.
