Quote of the Week "Building these products takes lots of time. Testing, simulations, modeling, prototyping, and problem-solving are all more extensive when you need to make sure the devices can stand up to the requirements of daily wear, such as frequent exposure to sweat and water. That's a lot more than you'd normally expect from your electronics. But if companies clear these obstacles, being able to sense things like blood pressure and skin conductivity continuously can also open the door to quantifying stress and mood, since they will make it possible to collect data about your body in all kinds of situations." - Rachel Metz, MIT Tech Review | Health Startup Digest is curated by: | | R. Hopefully you enjoy them as much as I did! | | Halle Tecco - Rock Health It's the start of the year, which means, year end wrap ups for 2016 and funding reports. This one from Rock Health paints a mixed picture. On one hand, digital health funding declined in 2016, while M&A activity ticked up to $6.8B (a 9% increase over 2015). It's also interesting to note that genomics/sequencing secured the most funding out of the categories that Rock Health tracks. I am a firm believer that the cooling down of funding is a good thing, and will hopefully force the industry to separate the proverbial wheat from the chaff. | | Michael Porter and Angel Gurria - Huffington Post Michael Porter and Angel Gurria write here about the importance of looking at outcomes beyond simple measures such as 5-year survival. 5-year survival is actually fairly consistent across many OECD countries for some diseases; however, other "quality of life" metrics can vary drastically. Porter's International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement (ICHOM) is working to create a systematic approach to outcomes measurement moving forward. Certainly an organization to keep tabs on. | | Rachel Metz - MIT Tech Review I'm generally not a big believer in the current state of wearable technology. We're no where close to where we need to be from an accuracy stand point. Rachel Metz from the MIT Tech Review tends to agree, and took it upon herself to do some testing on the subject. Spoiler alert, we've got a long way to go, but there are some promising technologies that will improve accuracy and detection that COULD start moving us in the right direction. | | Mike McCormick - Medium Mike takes a broad look at AI's impact in health care in this medium post. What I appreciate most about his view is the final caveat about the importance of humans. AI will not replace physicians anytime soon in almost any category (with the exception of maybe fields like radiology), and it is important for technologists to understand the human side of health care. | | | You are receiving this email because you believe that the best startup articles and videos are made by active members of the startup community.
