Starting a Startup is... ...hard

Ryan Mickle

"Generally, we founders ask for recommendations when we make decisions. And who you ask makes a huge difference. People generally have no problem recommending a solution, even when they aren't actually well-versed in something as specialized as starting a startup."

How to Use Both Your Wits in a Startup

Ben Huh

"To be a thoughtful, holistic decision-maker for your company, you must recognize that gut reaction and logic spring from the same source using two different tactics."

A Framework For Go-To-Market Strategy

Mark Leslie

"The way to build on an effective go-to-market strategy is to know whether marketing or sales is taking the lead."

Snag the Best Advisors for Your Startup

Amy Chang

On light touch advisors: "Keep the lift low for them. When you ask them to advise, tell them that this will mean pinging them a few times a year, and it will only and always be about something they know more about than nearly anyone else on earth."

Quotes of the Week
"I think that Theranos from an external perception on what people think about Silicon Valley and health care is damaging and is unfortunate; but, from an investor perspective I don't think that there is too much change because it wasn't the Bessemers. There was one Sand Hill Road investor as a seed, which was a connection through a family, and everything else was family offices. A lot of investors I know looked at it, and the moment a company that's progressing at innovation won't show you anything about how it works, you pass as an investor."
- Sean Duffy, CEO of Omada Health on Theranos and it's impact on the Digital Health investing landscape

"I'd also like to hear some evidence of how all of this big data/AI/machine learning work is resulting in actual activity to change physician and consumer behavior, particularly around improved diagnoses and avoidance of medical errors. So far most of the talk has been about technology and too little of the talk is about results. I hereby declare that the digital health theme for 2017 should be: you show me the evidence it works, I'll show you the money!"
- Lisa Suennen

2017 JP Morgan Healthcare Conference Recap

Steve Kraus - Bessemer Ventures

This is great. Bessemer just started up a new bi-weekly podcast on healthcare, hosted by Steve Kraus. The first episode is a recap of the JP Morgan Conference this year, with some great guests, and an overview of the vision for the podcast. This is a must listen/subscribe podcast moving forward for sure. Guests on this episode include journalist Chrissy Farr, Omada Health CEO Sean Duffy, and others.

If Your Digital Health Tech Works, I'll Show You the Money

Lisa Suennen - MedCity News

I love skeptics, especially digital health skeptics. In good fashion, Lisa Suennen throws a gauntlet to the digital health community: show me results, and I'll show you money. This seems like a pretty low bar to clear; however, in digital health too little time has been spent on the actual outcomes of technologies (which Lisa points out). See more of her thoughts on the subject above.

The Heroism of Incremental Care

Atul Gawande - The New Yorker

Atul Gawande, the man, the myth, the legend. His new piece in the New Yorker is about how we think about medicine as a potential cure all, a one time "heroic fix" even though most medicine is a long, excruciating process that can take years with small, incremental improvements. Technologists often think we can change anything quickly, but in health care that is generally not the case. This is a long read, but well worth it as a reminder of the long game in medicine.

John Arnold Made a Fortune at Enron. Now He's Declared War on Bad Science

Sam Apple - Wired

This is a longer piece from Wired on the Reproducibility Project and the broader move to ensure novel findings are in fact true science and can be reproduced. One pair of individuals in particular, John and Lara Arnold, are spearheading much of this movement through grants to ensure the validity of many scientific findings, which, as you can imagine, has ruffled more than a few feathers.

Cassidy-Collins, the GOP Replacement Plan That Lets Liberal States Keep Obamacare, Explained

Sarah Kliff - Vox

The entire healthcare ecosystem is trying to understand what the Trump Presidency means for the future of the ACA, and what will be replacing it. A lot of time has been devoted to repealing the health care legislation, without talk of replacement. Sarah Kliff covers one possible replacement, the Patient Freedom Act, which would be a flexible version that allows some states to keep the ACA in basically its current form. This might seem like a no brainer, but it is sadly getting some serious push back. Read more above.

3D Printing - Startup Digest - Ahoy! - January 27th - February 3rd

Startup Digest

3D Printing

January 27, 2017

Hey you!

Hope you are doing well.

I am still in Vegas hanging out with a bunch of incredibly smart scallywags discussing life and strategies for living effectively.

An interesting thing I learned is the Japanese art form called Kintsugi -- I found it interesting because it's a fantastic metaphor for adversity, pain and struggle that is inevitable in the human condition. The idea is to NOT hide the damage, rather, to incorporate it into the whole and create a unique entity. Quite beautiful.

As far as 3D Printing goes, we will be covering the following today:

1.) A fun DIY project
2.) MacLaren partering up with Stratasys
3.) Gravity Sketch (product)
4.) 3D Printing without supports
5.) Divergent 3D raising money
6.) Renting a 3D Printing farm
7.) Legal liability in 3D Printing

That's all for this week!

As always, if you have any tips, comments, questions or complaints, please hit reply and get in touch.

My goal with this newsletter is to provide you with the MOST VALUE in the realm of 3D Printing, and if I am not achieving that goal, we are both wasting our time :/ -- So, hit me up ;)

Until next time, my friend,
Dilanka

[DIY] - Archimedes Screw Bonanza

MakerBotLearning - thingiverse.com

I haven't included any DIY 3D Printable projects lately, so here is one. This is an Archimedes screw, which is a device that was allegedly invented by Archimedes (who was one of the most influential scientists from 3rd Century B.C.).

The idea is to be able to transport water from below ground to above ground (for irrigation, flood prevention etc..) and is still being used today. Good news is that you can 3D Print the entire thing at home :)

[NEWS] - MacLaren Racing partners with Stratasys

Stratasys - stratasys.com

MacLaren Racing recently partnered with Stratasys -- who will act as their official supplier of 3D Printed prototypes. One of the main purposes of this partnership appears to be focused on providing 3D Printing solutions in Formula 1.

[PRODUCT] - Gravity Sketch makes 3D Modeling much more intuitive

Cabe Atwell - solidsmack.com

If you have warmed up to the idea of VR, this might be of interest.

It's supposed to make 3D Modeling MUCH more intuitive and easier.

This is obviously new, so be patient -- it will only improve.

[VIDEO] - 3D Printer with Tilted Print Bed (to avoid support material)

YouTube - youtube.com

This is an interesting idea. A bunch of Swiss students have figured out a way to potentially print objects WITHOUT support material. The way this is accomplished is by tilting the bed at the moment of extrusion to remove the overhang. Very Interesting.

[NEWS] - Divergent 3D Raises $23 Million

Kirsten Korosec - fortune.com

Last week I mentioned about a 700HP Super Car that was 3D Printed (with metal) by a company called Divergent 3D. Well, turns out they just got a $23 MILLION cash infusion.

[NEWS] - Voodoo Manufacturing Raises $1.4M

Voodoo Manufacturing - voodoomfg.com

Many people use 3D Printing to start a side business and sell items on sites like Etsy.

Do you have a side business that involves 3D Printing?

If so, you might find what Voodoo Manufacturing does helpful.

Essentially, you can upload a 3D Printable design and have them print out thousands of units using their farm of 3D Printers.

They also just raised $1.4M.

[LAW] - 3D Printing and Legal Liability

Chris Mondics - philly.com

This is not a new piece, but it is still quite good. It talks about minimizing liability when it comes to 3D Printing -- written from a lawyer's perspective.

Quote of the Week
"Building these products takes lots of time. Testing, simulations, modeling, prototyping, and problem-solving are all more extensive when you need to make sure the devices can stand up to the requirements of daily wear, such as frequent exposure to sweat and water. That's a lot more than you'd normally expect from your electronics. But if companies clear these obstacles, being able to sense things like blood pressure and skin conductivity continuously can also open the door to quantifying stress and mood, since they will make it possible to collect data about your body in all kinds of situations."

37 Quotes on Health Care and Health Tech from 2016

Scott Munro - Medium

I collected all the quotes from last year's digests and organized them into a number of categories. Hopefully you enjoy them as much as I did!

2016 Year End Funding Report: A reality check for digital health

Halle Tecco - Rock Health

It's the start of the year, which means, year end wrap ups for 2016 and funding reports. This one from Rock Health paints a mixed picture. On one hand, digital health funding declined in 2016, while M&A activity ticked up to $6.8B (a 9% increase over 2015). It's also interesting to note that genomics/sequencing secured the most funding out of the categories that Rock Health tracks. I am a firm believer that the cooling down of funding is a good thing, and will hopefully force the industry to separate the proverbial wheat from the chaff.

Putting People at the Centre of Health Care

Michael Porter and Angel Gurria - Huffington Post

Michael Porter and Angel Gurria write here about the importance of looking at outcomes beyond simple measures such as 5-year survival. 5-year survival is actually fairly consistent across many OECD countries for some diseases; however, other "quality of life" metrics can vary drastically. Porter's International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement (ICHOM) is working to create a systematic approach to outcomes measurement moving forward. Certainly an organization to keep tabs on.

The Struggle for Accurate Measurements on Your Wrist

Rachel Metz - MIT Tech Review

I'm generally not a big believer in the current state of wearable technology. We're no where close to where we need to be from an accuracy stand point. Rachel Metz from the MIT Tech Review tends to agree, and took it upon herself to do some testing on the subject. Spoiler alert, we've got a long way to go, but there are some promising technologies that will improve accuracy and detection that COULD start moving us in the right direction.

AI Is Your Doctor's Next Best Friend

Mike McCormick - Medium

Mike takes a broad look at AI's impact in health care in this medium post. What I appreciate most about his view is the final caveat about the importance of humans. AI will not replace physicians anytime soon in almost any category (with the exception of maybe fields like radiology), and it is important for technologists to understand the human side of health care.

How to be a Good Mentor

Dave Schappell

"These will often help the startup team think about their product, or their situation. This can often be a way to make suggestions without criticizing."

Disconnected and Disenfranchised

Neil Rimer

"While the single-minded obsession with efficiency, repeatability and cost reduction makes sense from the purely micro-economic standpoint of a business, it's likely to be flawed over the longer term."

Linda Kozlowski

"We're all familiar with tech operations, but what COO really means, is business operations: how you operate your business, think about strategy, and move the business forward in growth."
