3D Printing

April 21, 2017

What up gangster?

Yes, it is Friday.

I don't know if you've ever used any bookmarking services, but increasingly, they are getting more and more useful for organizing links and resources (at least for me).

I used to use Delicious, but have switched to a service called Pinboard. It's run by a lone developer and it's (arguably) the best bookmarking service I have used thus far.

Hmm. What else?

I am in the middle of a (very fascinating) book called Philosophers Explore The Matrix.

It revolves around one of my favorite movies (The Matrix) -- and it has given me A LOT more insight into the philosophical aspects of the film. I'll be watching it again after I am done reading.

Anyway, as far as 3D Printing, today, we'll be covering:

1.) A Japanese artist getting arrested for distributing 3D Printable vaginas
2.) A design for an unbreakable key
3.) Chinese parlors using 3D Printing with the dead
4.) Fidget Spinners (Model of the week)
5.) 3D Printing with extraterrestrial materials
6.) Snapmaker's successful Kickstarter
7.) 3D Printing with sugar
8.) Some useful resources & interviews

TONS of interviews with industry folks...

That's all for this week.

Until next time, my friend.

[ARTICLE] - Artist Gets Arrested for Releasing 3D Printable Designs of her Vagina

Shusuke Murai - japantimes.co.jp

No, that title is not click bait. Also, this story is not new, but it is new to me so I am including it. It involves a Japanese artist who was arrested in 2014 for an art project involving 3D Printable designs of her vagina.

[ARTICLE] - A 3D Printed Key That Can't (Allegedly) be Copied

The Economist - economist.com

This is interesting. Essentially, it's a titanium key with the teeth on the inside of the key to prevent it from being 3D Scanned.

Just in case you aren't in the loop, about 2 years ago, the Transportation & Security Administration's (TSA) keys leaked onto the Internet. This means that anyone can download the keys and 3D Print them and they'll have access to 300 Million TSA Locks in circulations.

If you are interested in reading a good overview of what happened with the TSA keys, check out Bruce Schneier's commentary.

[ARTICLE] - Chinese Parlors Uses 3D Printing to Reconstruct Faces for Corposes

Mary-Ann Russon - ibtimes.co.uk

Just when you thought you couldn't apply 3D Printing to anything interesting.

[MODEL OF THE WEEK] - The Fidget Spinner

2RobotGuy - thingiverse.com

You may have heard of these fun toys -- but just in case you haven't heard of them, here's a 3D Printable model of it. It is especially handy/useful if you have been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD.

[ARTICLE] - These 3D Printed Tiny Houses Can Withstand Hurricanes (Allegedly)

Lidija Grozdanic - inhabitat.com

I don't think the *entire* house is 3D Printed, but it's still an interesting case study.

[ARTICLE] - 3D Printing with Extraterrestrial Materials

Adam Jackus - nature.com

A bit of a technical paper, but the gist is: Engineers are developing 3D inks to increase the variety of 3D Printable materials. This also includes processing MARTIAN and LUNAR soil. Yup.

[KICKSTARTER] - Snapmaker: The All Metal 3D printer

Snapmaker - kickstarter.com

This Kickstarter has been kicking ass.

[ARTICLE] - 3D Printing with Sugar

General Fabb - fabbaloo.com

Interesting -- from an experimental and an obesity stand point.

Aniwaa - aniwaa.com

I don't think I've mentioned this resource before. It's a solid place for comparison shopping 3D Printers. I remember when these guys got started a while back and their site has tremendously improved over time.
