Startup Digest

Enterprise

April 28, 2017

Hi everyone,

A lot of you were interested in the event with Katherine Maher last time, so I just wanted to share the other upcoming event we're doing for the same speaker series. We'll be hosting Abdi Soltani, the Executive Director of the ACLU Northern California, in San Francisco. Please feel free to reach out if this sounds interesting.

Here's Abdi's bio: Abdi is a nationally-recognized civil rights leader who has dedicated his adult life to social justice and equal treatment for all. His early work as an organizer helped change California from a state that passed some of the most regressive policies in the mid-90's to a state that is among the most progressive in our nation. As Executive Director of the ACLU of Northern California since 2009, Abdi's fight for civil liberties has been expansive and inclusive of racial, gender, and economic justice. He has deepened ACLU's partnerships with communities most directly impacted by injustice and disparities. Under his leadership, the ACLU is now present in the Central Valley and at the State Capitol. This expansion has enabled the ACLU to defend and advance the civil liberties of all Californians and to mobilize our communities as a collective voice for fairness and equity. Abdi is a Levi Strauss Foundation Pioneer in Justice Fellow, and he is actively involved in the Iranian-American community.

Have an awesome weekend,
Shuo

My Algorithm Is Better Than Yours

My algorithm is better than yours. My algorithm performs better on the precision/recall tradeoffs. It surfaces fewer false positives. It converges to an answer faster. Perhaps it requires a bit less data. Those statements might all be true. But none of these advantages confer a competitive sales advantage in the market. They aren't technology innovations leading to a go-to-market advantage.

Sales Metrics for Early Stage Companies

There are numerous articles discussing many well known metrics to track when companies scale, and an overwhelming volume of metrics you can track, but not enough clear guidance on early stage sales metrics that can help companies answer a few critical questions.

Dropbox's Playbook for International Expansion

There have been two pillars to growth at Dropbox. The first, Dropbox' freemium model based on word-of-mouth referrals, is something that most of us have experienced if we count ourselves among the company's 500 million users. The second driver behind Dropbox's growth to hit the 500 million user milestone is something that's less visible many of its core users.

[COMPANY] - Desktop Metal Releases New Product(s)

General Fabb - fabbaloo.com

I've mentioned Desktop Metal before. Here's some news from them regarding a few new products. Remember, this is a Google backed company that raised ~$100M in venture funding.

[NEWS] - Automated IoT Hacking

Adam Clark Estes - gizmodo.com

This particular story/tool is not directly related to 3D Printing, but in the future this type of thing could (very likely) affect 3D Printers as well. Which is why I am including it.

[INTERVIEW] - The Next Fiver Years with Mariana Duarte of InovaHouse3D

3DPI - 3dprintingindustry.com

I hope you enjoyed the Interview series from last week. There's a few more stragglers left for this week.

[COMPANY] - Mark Forged Wants to Build Metal Printing Farms

Corey Clarke - 3dprintingindustry.com

Mark Forged is an excellent company with an excellent line of products. This could get interesting.

[KICKSTARTER] - Proforge Hits Funding Goal

Proforge - kickstarter.com

This is a hobbyist level printer designed for geeks and tinkerers -- meaning, it doesn't look pretty. It still has some great features and the interest is evident by the funding goal being met so fast.

[INTERVIEW] - The Next Fiver Years with Joe DeSimone, CEO of Carbon

3DPI - 3dprintingindustry.com

This is one of the more interesting interviews from this series.

Developer - Startup Digest - WordPress and Web Optimization - April 28th - May 5th

Startup Digest

Developer

April 28, 2017

Hello Developers,

In this issue, we are going WordPress. WordPress is an online, open source website creation tool written in PHP. But in non-geek speak, it's probably the easiest and most powerful blogging and website content management system (or CMS) in existence today. WordPress is highly used by 87% of startups.

With the ease of use, WordPress also has its problems. In Nick Schäferhoff's article "10 Common WordPress Errors and Problems (and their solutions)", should you encounter the issues you would be able to deal with them in a timely fashion.

With most businesses and startups, they would make the choice to go with an inside or outside source freelancer or agency to work on their landing page or website. If you are looking for a WordPress theme and looking to make a purchase, please consider the following:

1) Make sure that it come with a short or long term maintenance agreement.
2) Make sure that the theme comes with instructions for installation and contact information if needed for assistance.
3) Make sure that is content on the theme is responsive to any screen display.

For more information on the selection of the perfect WordPress theme, check out this article from the Editorial staff of WP beginner

Website optimization can make the difference between getting customers and losing them. No matter how great your site looks on the desktop when the website comes up slowly on mobile devices, that is a problem that needs to be fixed. Consider using site that provides information on your site that you can use to fix the problems with optimization. Google PageSpeed is a great tool to use to speed up your site. Check out the links below for additional information on WordPress optimization.

In the next issue: JavaScript MVC Frameworks

As always, I am looking for comments from you. If you have an idea or a link that you would like to share or a blog post that you have written, I will be more than happy to share that with the community.

Have a great weekend.

Quote of the Week
"When people don't take the medications prescribed for them, emergency department visits and hospitalizations increase and more people die. Nonadherence is a huge problem, and there's no one solution because there are many different reasons why it happens."

The Cost of Not Taking Your Medicine

Jane Brody - NYT

Anyone in the healthcare field knows that medication adherence is a big problem and cost driver. This NYT piece goes into some of the details on the exact outcomes of this lack of adherence, which amount to between $100 billion and $289 billion in extra costs a year. Red more about it above.

Edible CRISPR Could Replace Antibiotics

Emily Mullin - MIT Tech Review

This week in CRISPR news: edible CRISPR! Seriously, is there anything this technology CAN'T do?? This piece combines CRISPR with the ever growing antibacterial resistance problem. As many know, we are running out of antibacterials to use as bacteria become more and more resistant. Enter CRISPR, which may be able to instruct, "harmful bacteria to self-destruct." Pretty neat, read more here.

Why Tech Companies Hire Chief Medical Officers

David Shaywitz - Forbes

Ever wonder what exactly Chief Medical Officers at health tech companies do, and how they differ from their counter parts at traditional life sciences companies. Look no further than this Forbes piece from David Shaywitz. It's a great review of both types of CMOs based on his experience, and the experiences of many of his peers.

Stricter chargemaster regulations needed to rein in healthcare costs

Alex Kacik - Modern Healthcare

The reasons for rising healthcare costs, and how to mitigate them are complicated... to say the least. This piece in Modern Healthcare explores how convoluted chargemasters (master list of what hospitals charge for different procedures) contribute to these costs, and why the prices listed on chargemasters have been growing over time. Certainly a good read for a quick primer on the subject!

A New Attempt Emerges To Bridge GOP Divisions On AHCA

Timothy Jost - Health Affairs

And you thought the AHCA was dead... negotiations have started up again over the Republican replacement for the ACA. This Health Affairs article serves to give you a quick update on what's changing, and what's new in the amended version of the bill.

Virtual Reality Is Used in Clinical Practice

The Medical Futurist

This is an interesting look at some of the research on VR from Brennan Spiegel and his team at Cedars-Sinai. I will say that the article is a bit more optimistic about VR than even Dr. Spiegel has been at times, which I find ironic. Spiegel has spoken about how we need to temper our expectations for technology in healthcare, as well as his experiences trying to put a VR headset on a terminally ill patient who basically looked at him like he was crazy.
