Quote of the Week
"But what Public Health professionals have known for decades and what Healthcare is now catching onto, is that the real story behind who is healthy and who is not has little or nothing to do with the doctor's office at all—the real story starts in the place you lay your head (if you have a place to lay it at all). The bigger picture and, therefore, the truly transformative opportunity is in the social, physical, political, and economic situation of each person—the social determinants of health. Leveraging tech for this more comprehensive approach to health is what we are calling Public Health Tech."
- Marquesa Finch, MPH & Vanessa Mason, MPH

Public Health Tech: The Future of Health Tech You Never Heard Of

Marquesa Finch, MPH & Vanessa Mason, MPH - The Doctor Weighs In

I could not love what Marquesa Finch and Vanessa Mason are doing with P2Health Ventures more if I tried. Their main thesis is that there is a missing emphasis on technologies that are fostering at risk communities and broader social determinants of health issues. They think (and I would generally agree) that this lack of focus merits starting a fund with a focus on this tech in particular. They talk about broader trends in this sub-sector in this piece. I highly recommend checking it out!

Five Predictions for Health Tech and Services in 2017

Dan Gebremedhin MD, MBA - Mobihealth News

I'm not always a fan of "prediction" posts, but this one from Dr. Gebremedhin is actually fairly interesting and informative. His background on the opportunity created by the 21st Century Cures Act for tools that enable post-launch research is particularly interesting to me. But honestly, all of his insights are pretty great, and the list of companies that play in his areas of interest is quite helpful. Check it out!

MacArthur Winner Adapts High-Tech Medicine to Third World

Jeff Lyon - JAMA

This is a great interview with Rebecca Richards-Kortum, PhD on her work in global health, and her focus on providing efficient, cost-effective solutions to the globes biggest health issues. While her focus is global health, with rising costs domestically, there is no reason this same mentality should not be used to improve outcomes efficiently in the US and other, more advanced nations.

Medicare Payment for Behavioral Health Integration

Matthew J. Press, M.D., Ryan Howe, Ph.D., Michael Schoenbaum, Ph.D., Sean Cavanaugh, M.P.H., Ann Marshall, M.S.P.H., Lindsey Baldwin, M.S., and Patrick H. Conway, M.D. - NEJM

Before Jan 1, providing CMS did not reimburse for behavioral health services; however, under the new model, there will be some reimbursement for coordinating interventions around behavioral health. This piece from JAMA goes into detail on what those interventions might look like, and what different reimbursement schema will be in place moving forward.
