3D Printing - Startup Digest - Hey - February 10th - February 17th

Startup Digest

3D Printing

February 10, 2017

Happy Friday!

I F**KED up last week.

I compiled a digest, but forgot to submit it because of the over stimulation of Las Vegas.

That's okay -- sometimes the universe forces you to take a break from 3D printing :)

How are things with you?

I've been really into a guy named Dan Pena lately -- he's a brutally honest 73 year old Mexican American that lives in a Castle in Scotland. He's got some really good stuff -- plus he's insanely entertaining. (For example, here's a clip of him explaining Why You're Poor) -- Check him out.

Anyway, today we'll be covering:

1.) An unfortunate incident
2.) 3D Printed weapons and it's legality
3.) A 3D Printed bridge in Madrid
4.) A Swedish Musician's song
5.) Intellectual property and 3D Printing
6.) A bunch of Kickstarters
7.) Investments by BMW & Lowes
8.) Autodesk CEO Stepping down
9.) Educators finding 3D Printing difficult
10.) A DIY Guide

All in all -- a solid digest.

As always, feel free to hit me up anytime with questions, suggestions etc.

Until next time my friend,
Dilanka.

Contemplation:

"..I'll tell you what hermits realize. If you go off into a far, far forest and get very quiet, you'll come to understand that you're connected with everything. "

[NEWS] - Couple Dies from Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Cheyenne Roundtree - dailymail.co.uk

This is an unfortunate incident, but for the life of me, I don't understand why this journalist didn't pay attention to the INCREDIBLY misleading (and inaccurate) reference(s) to 3D Printers. The probability of this happening from a standard consumer 3D Printer is very unlikely. This likely happened from a expensive printer that uses liquid plastics and resins. Any ideas?

[NEWS] - The Legal Minefield of 3D Printed Guns

Richard Matthews - econotimes.com

Good read.

[NEWS] - (First?) 3D Printed Bridge in Madrid

Phoebe Weston - dailymail.co.uk

Apparently humans are 3D Printing pedestrian bridges at parks.

[SONG] - Swedish Musician Writes Song, and the First Verse Mentions 3D Printing

Bob Boilen - npr.org

Now, this is cool -- and yes, the first verse mentions 3D Printing.

[COMPANY] - D3crypt3d (IP Protection for 3D Designers)

Cabe Atwell - solidsmack.com

Interesting company. Based on the history of the internet, I am EXTREMELY skeptical about DRM (digital rights management) and copy protection mechanisms.

If there's enough demand for a digital resource, I doubt any company could prevent people from breaking the encryption.

Napster for physical objects seems to be an inevitability. Who knows, maybe I'm wrong. Another company in the same space is Source3

[KICKSTARTER] - Creating a 1980's SCI-FI Flick with 3D Printing (and no CGI)

Nicola Piovesan - kickstarter.com

This is a cool project. These guys are creating a short sci-fi flick resembling the 1980's without using any CGI effects. One of the ways they are accomplishing this is by using 3D Printing.

[KICKSTARTER] - Tool to prevent Filament Jams

Christopher Robertson - kickstarter.com

Interesting project. ToyBuilderLabs has a tool for similar purposes as well.

[COMPANY] - BMW & Lowes invests in Desktop Metal

Lara Kolodny - techcrunch.com

Desktop Metal has received a big cash injection from BMW and Lowes. Considering that the CEO of Desktop Metal has experience with bringing a $1B company to public IPO -- the connections with VC's is a certainly a good thing. No idea about the product or value proposition as I couldn't find much online.

[NEWS] - Autodesk CEO Steps down

bloomberg.com - Bloomberg

Looks like Carl Bass is stepping down as CEO of Autodesk.

[NEWS] - Educators find 3D Printing difficult

Clare McDonald - computerweekly.com

It's unfortunate that so many teachers are having a difficult time with using 3D Printing in their classes. Other than the obvious bureaucratic nonsense, It sounds like there's not much "plug and play" solutions available for them.

Are you (or do you know of) an educator? What problems are they having with introducing 3D Printing to their students? I am curious.

[DIY GUIDE] - 3D Printing Gears

MechEngineerMike - instructables.com

If you are ever in the mood to 3D Printing a bunch of gears, this is an excellent guide. Also, be sure to bookmark this thingiverse page.
