Quote of the Week "For all the truly wondrous developments of modern medicine—imaging technologies that enable precision surgery, routine organ transplants, care that transforms premature infants into perfectly healthy kids, and remarkable chemotherapy treatments, to name a few—it is distressingly ordinary for patients to get treatments that research has shown are ineffective or even dangerous." - David Epstein | Health Startup Digest is curated by: | | R. LaMattina - Science To those that would make it easier to approve drugs in the US, LaMattina has a straight forward answer: "Over the years, the FDA has learned that, for many diseases, it is important that the drug maker prove the benefits of the drug before unleashing it on the public. Does this slow the process and greatly add to the R&D costs? Absolutely. But it is good medical practice." | | Kristen V. Brown - Gizmodo This Gizmodo article focuses mainly on a startup, DNA Lifestyle Couch, but also speaks more broadly about the dangers of genetics as a "pseudoscience". Companies like DNA Lifestyle Couch are actively giving health advice based on genetic tests (advice such as how much of certain vitamins to take). This is incredibly scary, and has very little actual scientific backing... | | Vivian Lee - STAT Every once in a while, I'll include an article here because I really disagree with it. This is one of those articles. The issue I have with patient reviews in health care, is that patients are generally very bad at reviewing their experience in a hospital beyond the surface level (decor, demeanor, etc). In fact, there have been multiple studies that show situations in which patients are satisfied actually tend to have worse outcomes. That being said, check out the article, and form your own opinions. | | David Epstein - The Atlantic Unnecessary care is one of the biggest plagues on the US' health system. We actually spend more on unnecessary spinal surgery than secondary education in this country. The Atlantic goes into more detail on this trend, and some alliances, like RightCare, that are trying to fix it. | | | You are receiving this email because you believe that the best startup articles and videos are made by active members of the startup community.
