Quote of the Week
"For all the truly wondrous developments of modern medicine—imaging technologies that enable precision surgery, routine organ transplants, care that transforms premature infants into perfectly healthy kids, and remarkable chemotherapy treatments, to name a few—it is distressingly ordinary for patients to get treatments that research has shown are ineffective or even dangerous."
- David Epstein

Biennial Health Insurance Survey, 2003-2016

Commonwealth Fund - Commonwealth Fund

This is a fascinating set of interactive charts from Commonwealth Fund on trends in health insurance from coverage to money spent that you can cut by demographic, age, etc. You can spend hours sifting through this stuff, and you should!

Approving New Drugs

John L. LaMattina - Science

To those that would make it easier to approve drugs in the US, LaMattina has a straight forward answer: "Over the years, the FDA has learned that, for many diseases, it is important that the drug maker prove the benefits of the drug before unleashing it on the public. Does this slow the process and greatly add to the R&D costs? Absolutely. But it is good medical practice."

The Next Pseudoscience Health Craze Is All About Genetics

Kristen V. Brown - Gizmodo

This Gizmodo article focuses mainly on a startup, DNA Lifestyle Couch, but also speaks more broadly about the dangers of genetics as a "pseudoscience". Companies like DNA Lifestyle Couch are actively giving health advice based on genetic tests (advice such as how much of certain vitamins to take). This is incredibly scary, and has very little actual scientific backing...

Why my Health System Collects and Publishes Patient Reviews

Vivian Lee - STAT

Every once in a while, I'll include an article here because I really disagree with it. This is one of those articles. The issue I have with patient reviews in health care, is that patients are generally very bad at reviewing their experience in a hospital beyond the surface level (decor, demeanor, etc). In fact, there have been multiple studies that show situations in which patients are satisfied actually tend to have worse outcomes. That being said, check out the article, and form your own opinions.

When Evidence Says No, but Doctors Say Yes

David Epstein - The Atlantic

Unnecessary care is one of the biggest plagues on the US' health system. We actually spend more on unnecessary spinal surgery than secondary education in this country. The Atlantic goes into more detail on this trend, and some alliances, like RightCare, that are trying to fix it.

3D Printing - Startup Digest - Failed Kickstarters - February 24th - March 3rd

Startup Digest

3D Printing

February 24, 2017

Happy Friday You!

I am slowly recovering from the excess weight gains from Vegas. I am already down 10 lbs and should be down 20 lbs more by end of March.

Speaking of nutrition, I just finished watching Michael Pollan's excellent documentary In Defense of Food (check it out if you get a chance).

Also, I just started reading The Problem of Political Authority -- and it's screwing with my head (in a good way) --- it's very much like the "Red Pill" of politics.

So far, I am unable to find any logical fallacies or loopholes on any of the arguments presented by the author.

Also started reading Tools of Titans (which is also great, but very scattered).

But... Who cares about any of that anyway?

This is a 3D Printing digest!

Speaking of which, we will be covering:

1.) The downfall of another Kickstarter (Tiko)
2.) Disney's quiet acquisition
3.) OpenBionics winning a $1M prize
4.) A man getting sentenced for CNC Mill'ed guns
5.) The Pros/Cons of owning a 3D Printer
6.) 3D Printing a ORCA Fetus
7.) Voodoo Manufacturing's new upcoming API
8.) ...and a couple of company/product updates

That's about it.

I hope you enjoy today, and the upcoming weekend.

As always, hit reply if you'd like to chat about anything.

Until next time, my friend,
Dilanka

Contemplation:

"...Wisdom is the instantaneous recognition that a crisis is a blessing, and even greater wisdom recognizes that blessings can also trigger a crisis. When we truly understand that, we're less likely to be upset about difficulties or elated about opportunities; we remain centered no matter what happens around us. That is one of the secrets of self-mastery..."

[NEWS] - Tiko: Another 3D Printing Kickstarter Failure

General Fabb - fabbaloo.com

Tiko raised about $3M on their Kickstarter a few years ago and they just put up a white flag by (essentially) announcing their failure to deliver product. In the middle of all this, the CEO of M3D was clever enough to take advantage of the situation by offering Tiko backers with discounted M3D Printers. Interesting stuff.

P.S: One of the reasons to Fabbaloo is that it's one of the *FEW* 3D printing related blogs with spam free, interesting content. The majority of them are a bunch of spam and advertisement laden cesspool(s) with nothing useful.

[COMPANY] - Disney Quietly Acquires Tech and Assets of MakieLab

Steve O'Hear - techcrunch.com

This is an interesting move. Mattel is supposed to release the (delayed) Thingmaker 3D Printer this year -- perhaps Disney is also getting into the game?

[COMPANY] - OpenBionics Just Won a Million Dollars for Their 3D Printed Prosthetics

Open Bionics - twitter.com

Congratulations! More about this particular price can be found here: https://www.roboticsforgood.ae/

[NEWS] - Man Gets 3 Year Sentence for Selling Guns Made with a CNC Mill

David Grossman - popularmechanics.com

This is not 3D Printed --- rather, the guy used a CNC Mill.

It's just a matter of time till stories like this will become more and more prevalent.

Remember: Technology is merely a tool. How you use it has everything to do with YOU and very little to do with the technology itself.

[NEWS] - Is Owning a 3D Printer Worth It?

Brian Benchoff - hackaday.com

One of the most underrated questions. Keep in mind: the best part of this article is in the COMMENTS section right below it. Read that.

[NEWS] - Recreating an ORCA Fetus

Avery Lill - kdlg.org

Five years ago, three orcas died in the Nushagak River.

One was pregnant, and Bristol Bay area scientists, students, and educators have been working to make a plastic model of the fetal orca's skeleton with the help of 3D Printing.

The fully assembled killer whale fetus is estimated to be about about 6-feet long.

[COMPANY] - Voodoo Manufacturing API

Voodoo - voodoomfg.com

Last week I mentioned Voodoo Manufacturing and how you could upload a 3D Printable file and have an entire farm of 3D Printers manufacture that part for you. In addition to the recent $1.4M seed funding, looks like they are releasing an API. Worth checking out. As a side note, I'd love to have a Voodoo app on the AstroPrint app store as well.

[COMPANY] - Manage Your 3D Printers and Charge for Prints with Lani Labs

Lani Labs - lanilabs.com

This might be of use to you if you operate a bunch of 3D Printers in an educational institute or library. Essentially, it allows you to charge for prints and manage printers with a bunch of users.

[PRODUCT] - Robo3D's R2 Printer Ready for Pre-Order

Robo3D - robo3d.com

This was a printer that was shown at CES 2017. It's finally available for Pre-Order -- if you are interested in that.

Why Our Co-Founder and Our CTO are Moving On

Joel Gascoigne

"We started off bootstrapped, then raised multiple rounds of funding. We experimented with self-management but for now have a more traditional management setup. We've waited to hire until it really hurt, and we've hired rapidly and recklessly when our views on ambition and growth changed."

55 things learned as a 19 year old VC

Tiffany Zhong

"Be skeptical. Don't believe everything you hear! I don't want to be a cynic, but this rule applies to life too, unfortunately."

You Are Not Alone

Jenny Lawton

"Dive into the network around you and learn from your it. Get connected. Be a mentor and find a good one. Take control of your learning. Everything is a teachable moment if you let it become one."

The Common Term Sheet Mistakes Founders Regret Making

Alex Graham

Despite the large increase in resources aimed at helping founders navigate the fundraising process, many still struggle when it comes to particular term sheet clauses that can have unintended consequences if misunderstood. These clauses can lead to founders losing control of their company or payout structures upon exit down the road, regardless of how much capital they succeeded in raising. This in-depth post by Toptal Finance Expert and VC Alex Graham fills the knowledge gap by breaking down the term sheet's trickiest clauses and the implications thereof.

3D Printing - Startup Digest - Straws and Job Cuts - February 17th - February 24th

Startup Digest

3D Printing

February 17, 2017

Hey you.

How are ya? Hope you are doing alright.

I gained way too much weight from my Vegas debauchery. In fact, I am the heaviest I've ever been (200LB @ 5'8) -- So, I've been eating super clean and maintaining my Brazilian Jiu Jitsu habit lately.

At this rate, I should be back where I want to (~170LB) by end of March ... or April at the latest.

Other than that, things are going well over here in San Diego.

Ah yes! We have a digest :)

Today, we'll be covering:

1.) The new McDonald's straw
2.) 3D Printing an ultrasound
3.) Prototyping product ideas
4.) Recycling failed prints
5.) More makerbot layoffs
6.) Eagle eyes
7.) The future of Industrial 3D Printing

That's all for now.

By the way, almost all of the responses I've gotten from this digest have been dudes (which is great) -- but, it would certainly be cool to hear from any geek ladies out there. (About suggestions, criticisms, links etc.)

Until next time, my friend,
Dilanka

[NEWS] - McDonalds Attempts to Reinvent Straw

Andrew Dalton - engadget.com

Here we have a team of engineers using 3D Printing and their engineering know-how to re-engineer a straw so that there's a MUCH MORE EFFICIENT delivery mechanism for accelerating obesity. The best part is the acronym: STRAW -- short for "Suction Tube for Reverse Axial Withdrawal.

Poverty, hunger, homelessness, mental health? nah -- let's work on a straw.

[NEWS] - 3D Printing a Newborn's Ultrasound

Denise Dador - abc7.com

The detail is not the greatest -- but I can see a LOT of expectant mothers being excited about this.

[NEWS] - Makerbot Cuts 30% More Jobs

General Fabb - fabbaloo.com

Like I am surprised.

[NEWS] - 3D Printed Eagle Eye

Beau Jackson - 3dprintingindustry.com

Not exactly "consumer 3D Printing" -- in fact, I am not sure if the "3D Printed" moniker even belongs here. In either case, this is still interesting.

[NEWS] - What's the Future of Industrial 3D Printing?

Vicki Holt - huffingtonpost.com

Not too shabby. I am personally involved in solving the "plug and play" problem mentioned in point #1. Only time will tell where this ship is going.

Startups, Software Development and the Art of Bicycle Maintenance

Edith Harbaugh

"When I recruited my first engineer, he was hesitant. The company was pre-revenue and seemed risky. I told him we had enough money to pay him for a one-month-contract while I tried to fundraise. During the month, he could interview anywhere he wanted. After a month, he could either stay or take any of the permanent jobs he wanted. That gave him — and me — enough time to make a better call. He stayed on for the ride."

Money, Blockchains, and Social Scalability

Nick Szabo

"Innovations in social scalability involve institutional and technological improvements that move function from mind to paper or mind to machine, lowering cognitive costs while increasing the value of information flowing between minds, reducing vulnerability, and/or searching for and discovering new and mutually beneficial participants."

Five Ways to Raise Capital in a Small Market

Ryan Broshar

"No matter how small. Get to know every investor in your region. Find out who has invested in local companies, what founders are from your town, what startups have come from your market. If you want bigger investors, you first need to demonstrate that you have local support. It's great signaling."
