3D Printing

May 06, 2016

Hello there boys and girls.

In this week's digest, we will cover:

1.) The most expensive (and slightly creepy) 3D Printed Mother's Day gift(s)
2.) Cheerleader Uniforms & Intellectual Property
3.) Bashing 3D Printed tumors
4.) Disney filing patents for a super fast 3D Printer

Hope you are doing well.

We moved our office to a temporary location in Downtown San Diego till we find a good spot. (We are still 3D Printing stuff on a daily basis though!)

In any case, just hit reply if you have any questions/comments/suggestions about this digest or 3D Printing ;)

Until next time,

For 30K Groupon will send your mom a life sized 3D printed replica of you for Mother's Day

Groupon

This is quite amusing. It's a groupon deal where you could send your mom a life sized, 3D Printed replica of yourself so you could keep her in company without being home -- all for the low price of $30,000.

Cheerleader Uniforms (and 3D Printing) are going to the Supreme Court

Michael Weinberg - michaelweinberg.org

This is an interesting case study about intellectual property and 3D Printing.

'Severability' is the test that US courts use to figure out which parts of things that are both functional and decorative can be protected by copyright (if any).  There is now a new test to determine this in part of the United States.

The test itself (arguably the tenth test currently being used) doesn't bring a lot more clarity to the issue, but is an excuse to walk through how all of this works.  Most of this blog post just explains how the court applied the test in this one case.

10-yr-old boy bashes 3D printed tumor "Boris"

University of Michigan - YouTube

This is a fun story. Casey is a 10-year-old with cancer and they decided to let Casey smash a 3D Printed replica of his tumor (named 'Boris') in front of his class. This is certainly an unintended use of 3D Printing.

Disney is allegedly working on a super fast 3D Printer

Mattel is reviving its classic "Thingmaker" as a 3D Printer (which will be released later this year)... and it's interesting to see Disney (and potentially Apple) also jumping in to play the game.

If you need any ideas on what to 3D Print next, try this. It's a fun (and simple) design that is movable. It's a perfect print for kids as well! If you need more ideas on what to 3D Print, try http://whatshouldi3dprint.com
