What Techstars Gave Me

Sometimes the most brilliant things start with a simple idea. To nurture it, you need a network, people, culture and experienced entrepreneurs that empower you. It's about becoming a part of something that is bigger than yourself, finding validation in your company and your team, and giving back. Over the past 10 years, Techstars has helped entrepreneurs succeed, working with founders around the world starting great companies. Listen to these founder stories about how they started and their Techstars experience. go.techstars.com/founderstories

Why a Company Can't "Be More Like a Startup"

Steve Blank

"At times laws and regulations are in place for the health and safety of consumers. But often the legal obstacles confronting startups have been put in place by companies that look to the government and regulators as their first line of defense against new market entrants. (Existing companies also use network effects of monopolies/duopolies, distribution channel kickbacks, etc., to stifle competition.)"

Doing The Heavy Lifting

"Not all venture capital firms in your syndicate will be the same. Not all of the VCs on your board will be the same. Some will be challenging to deal with. Some will be unproductive and distracting. Some will be nice to have around but won't do much. A few will roll up the sleeves and do the "heavy lifting.""

To Grow Faster, Hit Pause

Claire Hughes Johnson

"A lot of companies don't decide how they want to grow until they're well into their growth phase. For a long time, your actions pull your company along, and then all of a sudden it switches — your existing business starts pushing your behavior. External forces like feature requests, the need for more customer support, the need to create a team to do X when you never even needed to do X before — those forces start to dictate your decisions."

How to Build Your Board

Glenn Kelman

"When interviewing potential board members, don't focus on being impressive or being impressed. You cannot truly listen in either mode."
