Quote of the Week "Doctors 'are the experts on the medical side,' says Yale's Dr. Krumholz. 'Patients are experts on themselves.' While they need coaching to make major medical decisions, he adds, 'it's up to us to give them permission to make a decision that's not like ours.'" - Medicare Requires Some Heart Patients to See a Second Doctor, WSJ | Health Startup Digest is curated by: | | R. Sports tech obviously doesn't have the same regulations as traditional health care, and thus can be the wild wild west at times. Companies will market the next enhancement for amateur and pro-athletes but have very little science to back up their technology. Check it out. | | Joyce Lee, MD, MPH - The UX Blog It's no secret that design is lacking for a lot of health care products and services. In this piece Dr. Lee talks about how human-centered design might help (and is currently helping) to improve products from epipens to insulin injectors. | | Hung Nguyen - Tradecraft I generally don't like listicles (5 Cute Dogs to Make You Laugh) popularized by Buzzfeed, but this is a pretty solid overview of the challenges and potential solutions that many digital health entrepreneurs face selling into health care. I highly recommend checking this out. | | Ron Winslow - WSJ Unnecessary medical care is a huge burden on the health care system, and one way to reduce the potential for this type of care is for peer review of potential patient interventions. This WSJ article talks about how Medicare is tying so-called "shared decision-making" to reimbursement for some devices and patients. WSJ mentions that this is to ensure the patient's own preferences are taken to account; however, I imagine the other reason for this is to reduce costs associated with unnecessary surgeries. | | Heather Caspi - HealthcareDIVE This is an overview of a study done at UCLA regarding the implementation of behavioral health services. The study showed a 13% reduction in ED use among the population even as the system targeted an even larger population to behavioral health services. Interestingly, UCLA also demonstrates how other institutions might be able to implement similar services. | | Adam Piore - MIT Tech Review The opioid addiction problem in the US is real, and doesn't show any signs of slowing. As the article mentions, "[i]n 2014, the number of deaths from opioid overdoses in the United States topped 18,000, about 50 a day—more than three times the number in 2001." This MIT Tech Review piece talks about some new innovations in non-addictive pain killers that might help solve part of the issue. | | | You are receiving this email because you believe that the best startup articles and videos are made by active members of the startup community.
