Health Reading List | October 09, 2015 | Startup Highlight: Smart Shopper
Planet Money had an episode about Smart Shopper this week. The company, recently acquired by Vitals, pays patients to seek care out at cheaper care centers. The bigger the savings for the patient, the more the patient will get paid. Insurance companies have been trying to push patients towards cheaper care centers for years, but it seems like Smart Shopper is having some serious success flipping the incentive structure from negative to positive. Implications for reducing runaway health care costs are pretty clear with this. It will be interesting to see how Vitals integrates the company into their overall strategy.
