Startup Highlight: Face2Gene

It's hard not to include a number of articles on how the election will impact the healthcare industry this week, from providers to payors to pharma. Regardless of your political leanings, this will be a tumultuous few years... God speed.

As always, if you come across news, announcements, videos, or podcasts that you think everyone else would benefit from, e-mail me at scott.munro@startupdigestmail.com or tweet @R_Scott_Munro.

Quote of the Week

"While Kraft is clearly a tech enthusiast and an early-adopter, he's also realistic. Technology can help us manage our health, better than ever, but however technically advanced, devices cannot overcome the human factor.

'Behavior is still the cause of most of our top chronic diseases,' he noted."

- Diane Stresing

How will the Trump administration change healthcare?

Todd Shryock - Medical Economics

Some high level thoughts on how Trump is likely to change the health care policy landscape. As most know, he plans to repeal the ACA, but what would that look like? A full repeal is unlikely given the scale of the policy, but targeted pull back (including the elimination of subsidies and the insurance penalty) is possible. The likely interventions will no doubt spell the end of the already wavering exchanges, and are a lot of the reason why hospital and insurance companies have been hit so hard on the markets this week.

Daniel Kraft: Tech tsunami in healthcare coming, but are there right platforms to catch wave?

Daniel Kraft - MedCity News

A slight distraction from the otherwise bleak news this week, this one on the coming "Tech tsunami," as Daniel Kraft calls it, coming towards health care. In many ways, we've already seen this tsunami hit; but, Kraft wonders whether we have the right platforms in place to take advantage of it... Of course, he ends with a point we should all keep in mind: "Behavior is still the cause of most of our top chronic diseases."

Biopharma's Trump Party Is a Little Too Raucous

Max Nisen - Bloomberg

While providers and payors were hit hard by the Trump victory, Pharma/biotech saw gains on Wednesday as many expected a shift away from pricing policy. Bloomberg argues that this jump is likely a bit premature given how much of a wild-card Trump is. We'll have to wait and see what the real impact on the overall system here is, but to read more on it check this piece out.

Donald Trump's Pledge to Repeal Health Law Carries Risks

Stephanie Armor and Louise Radnofsky - WSJ

Another look at the potential impact and path that Trump may take to dismantle the ACA. This one from the WSJ. I recommend reading both this and the Medical Economics piece to get a more holistic view of what may be coming down the line.
