Quote of the Week

"Digital health is likely to have a strong Hype Cycle because healthcare is such a difficult market in which to make change happen on a large scale. Regulation, patent protection, and regional concentration of suppliers resist change. Most patients don't know how to act as consumers, and many don't want to do so."

Fitbit shows impressive wellness data, but more peer-reviewed studies needed

Neil Versel - MedCity News

Fitbit is trying very hard to disprove what many skeptics have said for some time (myself included): there is no data to prove efficacy. In a new report, "According to Fitbit, the RTA saved $2.3 million on projected employee healthcare costs of $15.5 million over two years — nearly 15 percent. Plus, participants saw LDL cholesterol decrease by 12 points and blood glucose by 17 points in the first year." Now, of course this is a company sponsored research study, so we'll see where this goes. But it may be a step in the right direction, at least.

Insulin Prices Soar While Drugmakers' Share Stays Flat

Denise Roland - WSJ

Soaring prices for drugs and devices have been in the news a lot recently, as well as the influence of pharmacy benefit managers. This WSJ piece looks at why it might be the case that drug makers can increase their pricing, without taking in any larger amounts of profit. No matter the reason for the rising top-line prices, consumers are feeling more of the burden of rising costs, which means they are becoming more and more upset about it. Something will certainly have to give soon.

Great Article in NEJM Clearly Explains How Machine Learning Will Affect Healthcare

Leonard D'Avolio - LinkedIn

Interesting quick overview of a recent NEJM article on Machine Learning in healthcare. Take away is: it's useful, but not for every specialty AND it will take some time for education on the use cases to take hold in the industry. Nothing ground breaking here, if you have a subscription to NEJM, feel free to send me a PDF of the entire piece!

What will healthcare look like in the future?

Caterina Falleni - Medium

Some great quotes and insights from the Exponential Medicine Conference. I generally try not to give too much credit to "futurists", but it's important to see what these folks see as the future of health care so that we can better understand potential road maps to get there.
