Startup Highlight: BTech Innovation

One of the main use cases for 3D printing in health care is obviously in the arena of orthopedics. BTech Innovation is making hyper-patient-specific implants using 3D printing technologies from the software/mapping side to the material printing side. This will certainly be a company to watch in the space.

Quote of the Week

"Well-designed technology solutions can provide ancillary support, skills training, and feedback to patients. When easily accessible, it can help patients navigate confusing health systems and monitor their conditions outside the clinic, reducing readmission rates to EDs and easing the patient volume at overloaded clinics. Building and adding to the evidence base for smart, well-designed, cost-effective digital health innovations in medically vulnerable populations has the potential to revolutionize federal reimbursement models, thereby generating alternative funding streams for such innovations. Best of all, well-designed, efficacious interventions help patients achieve health."

StartUp Health Insights 2016 Midyear Report

Startup Health - Startup Health

Startup Health released their latest funding report for digital health, and the sector seems to have received even more funding than the record year in 2014 (according to SH's data). Most of the data is pretty self-explanatory, nothing incredibly eye-catching here, but I would still read through it to see the data broken down.

Corporate Adventures in Health Care Venture Capital

Lisa Suennen - Health Evolution Summit

I have spoken about the trend towards corporate VCs (CVCs) in this digest before, but here the incredibly smart Lisa Suennen breaks down the trends in corporate investing in health care. In fact, 24.4% of all venture deals in med device and biotech had CVC participation in 2015. There is a lot more to pull out from this report (like the fact that these CVCs are predominately focused on HIT and health services) so I recommend going through it yourself, you won't be disappointed.

Innovation for Medically Vulnerable Populations

Vanessa Mason, MPH - Medium

This is the introduction to what will be an amazing 5-part series from Vanessa Mason on innovating within medically vulnerable populations. Technologies have generally innovated for the higher end of the income spectrum, but as Vanessa points out, in health care we need to innovate for those populations that are most at risk to add extra costs to our system. The issue is that, historically, these populations also had low access to technology. With rising technology adoption among at risk communities, Vanessa sees a opportunity to create digital solutions here. I'll be posting the coming 4 parts of the series in the coming weeks!

Breaking Down MACRA: A Chat with Andy Slavitt (Part I)

Jordan Schlain, MD - Tincture

Heard the term MACRA thrown around, but not quite sure what folks are talking about? Check out Dr. Schlain's 3-part series interviewing CMS' Andy Slavitt on the subject to get a quick crash course on what CHIP's re-authorization means for the industry. Part 1 is above.

Men can test their sperm count at home with new device Trak

Moira Weigel - The Guardian

This week in ridiculous startups - a home sperm testing kit that will ship for $159.99 this October. While I understand the market for this, I can't help but ask myself: When has the quantified self movement gone too far?
