Health - Startup Digest - July 29th - August 5th

Startup Digest

Health

July 29, 2016

I am going to start doing Q&As with the CEOs at health tech companies as part of the Digest. First up, we have an interview with Procured Health's CEO, Hani Elias. You can check out the Q&A, here.

As always, if you come across news, announcements, videos, or podcasts that you think everyone else would benefit from, e-mail me at scott.munro@startupdigestmail.com or tweet @R_Scott_Munro.

Quote of the Week
"There is a compelling superficial logic to value-based pricing. Why shouldn't manufacturers charge the full value of the products they produce? Why shouldn't consumers have to pay it? That logic begins to fray, however, when you think about how other markets work in our capitalist system." - David Blumenthal, M.D.

"Technology companies have operated with success by "faking it" since the dot com era: Sales and marketing teams sell the dream instead of the reality, and cross their fingers that engineering can catch up in time for the next release. The mentality works for a variety of standard tech industries — consumer electronics, social media platforms and enterprise storage to name a few — but it can be catastrophic in healthcare."

The New Playbook in Digital Health

R. Scott Munro - 1776

This was a piece I wrote for 1776 on the need for clinical trials and evidence in digital health to move past being viewed as "digital snake oil." In my view, by using the traditional life sciences product development playbook, digital health companies can increase their trustworthiness (and ultimately adoption).

Are Investors Still Squeamish About Putting Money Into Women's Health?

Christina Farr - FastCo

Christina Farr has a piece here looking at the lack of funding for some women's health products, and the sexism that can be present within the process for raising money for such businesses. The treatment that the founders of Nuelle got on Sand Hill Road is pretty horrifying, definitely recommend reading the entire story.

Q&A with Procured Health's Hani Elias

R. Scott Munro - Medium

I am going to start highlighting conversations I have with health tech CEOs as part of the Health Tech Digest. The first of these Q&As is an interview with Procured Health's CEO, Hani Elias. It was a great conversation. We covered selling in health care, Procured Health's history, and how he thinks about fundraising. Check it out!

Disciplined Approach to Drug Discovery and Early Development

Robert M. Plenge, MD, PhD - Science Translational Medicine

"In this Perspective, [Dr. Plenge] builds on previous studies and provide a framework for integrating four key components to address the decline in R&D productivity: (i) causal human biology, (ii) therapeutic modality, (iii) biomarkers of target modulation, and (iv) clinical PoC studies [...] if all four features are satisfied for a given program, there will likely be an increased probability of success in delivering new and meaningful therapies to patients."

The Genomics Inflection Point: Implications for Healthcare

Lauren Devos, Teresa Wong, Sandra Iyer - Rock Health

This is a great Rock Health report on genomics put together on the back of a survey they conducted of 1,000 consumers on the subject. This is an incredibly comprehensive report (as we are used to from Rock Health) that goes into types of business models, partnership types, and opportunities in the space.

Value-Based Drug Pricing: Watch Out for Side Effects

David Blumenthal, M.D. - The Commonwealth Fund

Many have argued about the benefits of value-based pricing for life sciences, Dr. Blumenthal brings up an example of penicillin (our dirt cheap antibiotic) and how cheap it is despite being such a life saving therapeutic. Under a purely value-based system, how much would this antibiotic cost?

Infographic: Roadblocks to Delivering Health Information to Vulnerable Populations

Oliver Wyman - Oliver Wyman

I thought this would be interesting to highlight as Vanessa Mason's series on innovating for at risk populations. This is a quick look at the roadblocks in innovating for these populations from Oliver Wyman.

Startup Digest

3D Printing

July 29, 2016

Hey you.

How are things?

Recently, I found a great Chrome plugin called "Facebook News Feed Eradicator" -- it kills my News Feed and shows an inspiring quote instead.

What a difference has it made! No more negativity, nonsense, or useless news stories.

Anyway...

In this week's digest, we will cover:

1.) Metal 3D Printing Patents
2.) Penguin getting a 3D Printed boot
3.) Criminal's stealing cargo's while using 3D Printing
4.) California legislation on Gun Control
5.) TSA Locks Hacked Again

That's about it.

Feel free to get in touch with me if you have any questions/suggestions. Just hit reply.

Thanks again! See you next week!

P.S: I will be in NYC this weekend for Affiliate Summit, if you wan't to grab coffee, hit me up.

Metal 3D Printing: The Next Stage of the 3D Printing Revolution?

Filemon Schoffer - techcrunch

Later this year, key patents for 3D Printing with metal will expire. This means that, like consumer 3D Printing, a lot of companies will start making products and printers exploiting these patents. Interesting read.

Penguin Gets New 3D Printed Boot

Avianne Tan - abc

Cute story. A group of middle school students used 3D Printing to print out a new boot for an injured penguin. If you've been following this digest, you should be familiar with 3D printing helping a wide array of injured animals get back up on their feet (cats, dogs, ducks, turtles, etc.). Also, what a great way for kids to learn about technology!

Criminal uses of 3D Printing: Physical Theft

general fabb - fabbaloo.com

Interesting use of 3D printing: criminal's stealing cargo from shipping containers by replacing the broken cargo seal with a 3D printed one. Within the past year, TSA's master keys leaked online, and a bunch of artists broke into a museum in Berlin to secretly scan the bust of queen Nefertiti (2000+ years old) and leak it online. There's likely much more of this to come.

New Legislation in California for 3D Printed Guns

VICE - vice.com

On Friday, California Governor Jerry Brown signed into law legislation requiring anyone who makes or assembles a homemade firearm (i.e: 3D printed) to apply for a serial number or "other mark of identification" from the state Department of Justice. This means passing a background check. What do you think? Do you agree or not?

TSA Locks Hacked Again

Tom Brant - pcmag.com

So, if you weren't aware, in 2014, The Washington post (inadvertently) posted a picture of the TSA's (Transportation and Security Administration) master keys and a bunch of hackers leaked 3D Printable versions of them. See: https://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2015/09/tsa_master_keys.html

Well, apparently, another TSA Lock has been hacked and 3D printable versions of the master key has been released.

Startup Highlight: JumpStartCSR

Here is another example of a young entrepreneur doing great things, JumpStartCSR combines biosensors with ergonomics to help customers from the Army to traditional orthopedic patients. The company's product, Holmz, "tracks over 80 different factors that are interpreted by it's expert system to provide evidence-based insights through an interactive user experience enabling the user and clinicians to improve performance.  Holmz then goes one step farther in using this data to design and fabricate, though additive manufacturing, intelligent personalized ergonomic products designed to mitigate risks of repetitive stress injuries and improve performance."

Quote of the Week

'At most digital health "pitchfests," it's pretty much white millennials hawking their technology to potential investors. "It's about the shiny new object that really is targeted at solving problems for wealthy individuals, the 'quantified-self' people who already track their health," Aulakh said. "Yet ....What if we could harness the energy of the larger innovation sector for some of these really critical issues facing vulnerable populations in this country?"'

Digital Health Funding 2016 Midyear Review

Mitchell Mom // Ashlee Adams - Rock Health

Rock Health came out with their funding report for the first half of 2016, and they have funding dropping slightly relative to 2014 and 2015 (vs. Startup Health which had funding increase relative to both years). Check out the entire report in the link above!

Better Than Opioids? Virtual Reality Could Be Your Next Painkiller

Rachel Metz - MIT Tech Review

Virtual reality has been used during surgeries to calm patients down and reduce blood pressure, now it's being used as a supplement to traditional opioids. As the author mentions, "in one study, virtual reality did about as well as narcotics in reducing pain."

Are Fitbits Fitting into Hospitals' Care Coordination Plans?

Eric Wicklund - mHealth Intelligence

I often include links that go over how silly Fitbits and wearables can be, so I wanted to include one about the positive impact of these technologies and how hospitals are using them to improve patient care. For example, "New York's Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center is giving its multiple myeloma patients activity trackers to wear for about four months of their treatment therapy. The data collected from the trackers will be used by researchers to gauge how patients are reacting to their treatments, and to help the health system tailor the treatment to the individual."

Social spending, not medical spending, is key to health

Stuart M. Butler - Brookings

This is a great Brookings report that tries to uncover why it is that the US spends more on health care than other developed countries, yet has worse outcomes. Many are starting to think that it may have to do with, "the balance of spending in America between medical services and social services, including such things as housing assistance, food aid, and child support. Medical experts are increasingly coming to the conclusion that improving these "social determinants" often results in better long-term health than does intensive and expensive medical care."

The Challenge Of Taking Health Apps Beyond The Well-Heeled

'At most digital health "pitchfests," it's pretty much white millennials hawking their technology to potential investors. "It's about the shiny new object that really is targeted at solving problems for wealthy individuals, the 'quantified-self' people who already track their health," Aulakh said. "Yet ....What if we could harness the energy of the larger innovation sector for some of these really critical issues facing vulnerable populations in this country?"'
