Health Reading List | May 22, 2015 | Hello friends,
I can't believe it's already Memorial Day Weekend. How time does fly. One of the focus areas this week is the heated debates around conflict of interest as it pertains to medicine. Personally, I do believe the world has swung too far in the "anti-industry" side of things, but that there is a very fine line to balance between conflict of interest and innovation.
Have a relaxing and enlightening Memorial Day Weekend,
Scott
Startup Highlight: EchoPixel
EchoPixel is building a new world of patient care with its interactive, 3D medical visualization software.
The True3D system allows medical professionals to interact with patient-specific organs and tissue in an open 3D space emanating from a display, enabling doctors to immediately identify, evaluate, and dissect clinically significant structures. In diagnostic, surgical planning and image guided treatment applications, EchoPixel technology amplifies human expertise and improves both clinical efficacy and workflow.
EchoPixel is a privately held, venture backed company located at the Fogarty Institute for Innovation in Mountain View, CA.

He takes a critical view of her arguments and makes some great arguments of his own. A must read if you've taken the time to read Dr. Rosenbaum's NEJM article. | | Sachin Jain - Medical Marketing & Media "Even the industry's sunniest personalities don't deny that pharma has an image problem among outside constituencies, with an unfortunately high percentage of observers believing the biz is first and foremost about profits. Sachin Jain dives deep on this and other perceptions—accurate and otherwise—about the industry and its marketing machinery" | | John Mack - Pharma Marketing Guy The final piece in the "conflict of interest" articles/resources, this is an interview with Tom Stossel on John Mack's Pharma Marketing Guy podcast. Parts of it devolve into arguments, and I waver between amusement and annoyance when listening to these podcasts, but given the general theme this year, I felt this was important to include. | | Halle Tecco - KQED Science I have so much respect for Halle Tecco and everything she has done with Rock Health, and her advice here is a must read (if you haven't already read it). Too many companies try pilot programs and count them as customers without thinking through whether the physicians, or health systems would actually pay for their product. | | Neil Versel - MedCity News There's no doubt that physicians need better collaboration tools, many HCPs have flocked to twitter to fill this need. There is little doubt in the long term benefit of what platforms like twitter offer, but there must be something better for collaboration in health care (in my opinion). | | Jessica Leber - FastCo Exist IntuitiveSurgical is the gorrilla in the room for robotic surgery. This article and the accompanying video go a long way to prove that. The robot apocalypse isn't far off. | | DJ Pangburn - Motherboard The Silicon Valley Virtual Reality Conference was this week so I wanted to include some health related VR news. As I previewed, EchoPixel is doing great things in the health VR space, and they are only the beginning of what will be a huge segment of health education and pre-op preparation. | | Lisa Rosenbaum, M.D. - New England Journal of Medicine Dr. Rosenbaum had a well written series of pieces in the New England Journal of Medicine taking a critical look at the "pharmascandal" movement that has been on the rise since the 80s. While we must always be careful when it comes to conflicts of interest, Dr. Rosenbaum raises great points regarding how we've gone too far.
