Health Reading List

May 15, 2015

It's Friday, get excited!

I hope everyone enjoys the articles and news this week. We've got some great audio content from This Week in Startups focusing on great health care firms and as always bits of news and articles that I hope you may have missed this week.

Have a stupendous weekend and go enjoy a sunset,

Scott

Startup Highlight: Athos

One of the items this week is an interview with the co-founders of Athos (one of whom is Chamath Palihapitiya of Social+Capital), so I wanted to include it as the highlight. Athos is one of the many new sensor technology/wearable companies pushing the limits on how we can track our bodies. Their tech gives us the ability to not only see how many calories we've burned, but which exact muscles are being engaged, and to what extent. Very cool stuff with incredibly possibilities when it comes to rehabilitation and training.

As always, if you come across news, announcements, videos, or podcasts that you think everyone else would benefit from, e-mail me at scott.munro@startupdigestmail.com or tweet @R_Scott_Munro.

This Week in Startups - "Future of Health"

Jason Calacanis - This Week in Startups

"Today's episode is another incredible two-parter from Launch Festival 2015. First, a fascinating panel discussion on the "Future of Health" with three companies leading the charge: Athos (smart clothing that gives you important data on your muscles in real-time), e-Nable (3D-printed prosthetic hands given to children for free), & AcuPebble (a tiny sensor that monitors breathing & cardiac activity)."

Defining digital medicine

Eric Elenko, Lindsay Underwood & Daphne Zohar - Nature Biotechnology

Another great "overview" piece that goes into some great detail about all the aspects of Digital Health you could think of.

CVS MinuteClinic hits 25M visits as a nice adjunct to primary care

Neil Versel - MedCity News

We've seen some news regarding the "MinuteClinic" model being adopted by companies beyond CVS, and this data and press release is huge. With 25M visits, the sky is the limit for this economic option for low cost items that are today being treated in high cost facilities.

Insulin dose calculator apps may actively contribute to inaccurate dose recommendations

Aditi Pai - Mobihealth News

Our weekly reminder that innovation isn't good unless it is clinically relevant and undergoes a rigorous review process.

Washington's Interest in Precision Drugs is Innovation, Not Cost

Caitlin Owens - National Journal

This is a bit late, but a great piece discussing the counter points to Precision Medicine, and how the highly specialized drugs that are coming out of the next-gen therapeutic companies are far more expensive than their generic counterparts.

Jennifer Doudna, a Pioneer Who Helped Simplify Genome Editing

Andrew Pollack - New York Times

If you're worried about the rise of Precision Medicine and the genetic revolution, the news of Dr. Doudna's work will absolutely terrify you. This article goes into some of the back story, recent news about researchers using her technique in China, and the fight for the intellectual property behind the process.
