[STUDY] - 3D Printing Air Pollution Study

UL - ulchemicalsafety.org

Last year, I mentioned that UL was conducting a study analyzing potential safety issues with consumer (and desktop) 3D printers.

Well, here are the results from that study.

It's quite good.

[COMPANY] - On Demand 3D Printing Platform Xometry Secures $15M Funding

Business Wire - businesswire.com

Xometry is a on demand manufacturing platform for 3D Printing/Manufacturing. I haven't heard much about these guys until now, but apparently they've raised $15M.

[COMPANY] - MakerBot's Market Strategy Now Seems Much More Certain

General Fabb - fabbaloo.com

A quick analysis on Makerbot's new focus on the educational sector.

[ARTICLE] - Hydroprinting, a Method for Printing Conductive Patterns

[ARTICLE] - 3D Printing CEO Starts His Own Crowdfunding Platform

Stephen Babcock - technical.ly

Essentially, the folks from M3D (who had a successful Kickstarter for their 3D Printer) has started their own crowdfunding platform with the main benefit of having hand vetted, guaranteed delivery of projects.

Not sure how this is going to play out, but it's nevertheless interesting.

Identifying and Integrating Independent Board Members

Michelle Wilson

"Another key independent board member is one who's skilled at advising and mentoring CEOs. This is more than a corporate coach — it's someone who's been chief executive, ideally at a growth stage to which the CEO is about to embark."

Distribution

Ben Horowitz

"What is a sales channel? It's a route to market for a product or set of products. It can range from your website to a sophisticated sales force. The sale itself must be supported with the right marketing, process, and optimization strategy. Selecting the right channel is critical for any business — and products often fail because the company chose the wrong route to market."

Should Startups Care About Profitability?

Mark Suster

"If you hire 6 senior sales reps in January at $120,000 / year salary then you've taken on an extra $60,000 per month in costs yet these sales people might not close new business for 6 months. Your profitability will go down for 2 quarters while your growth may increase dramatically in quarters 3–12."

From Startup to Scaleup

Sam Altman and Reid Hoffman

Sam and Reid discuss:
- How to think about hiring when a startup is growing quickly, and why culture is so connected to the success of a company.
- How to measure execs on their scaling-readiness.
- The difference between how scaling looks on the outside vs. the inside.

Startup Digest - Enterprise - June 23rd

Startup Digest

Enterprise

June 23, 2017

Hi everyone,

Hope you've been well! I just had the great fortune of spending a week with Sir Richard Branson on his island along with an awesome group of innovators to discuss emerging technologies and social issues around the globe. One of the key conversations we had was around blockchain technology.

So far in 2017, blockchain entrepreneurs have raised $327m through ICO offerings, a figure that now exceeds the $295m raised through VC funding. In light of the recent buzz around cryptocurrency trading and bitcoin / ether price fluctuations, those of us based in the Bay Area decided to put together a panel to share some of the most interesting issues we discussed on Necker Island.

Come join our event on June 27th to hear more about the top opportunities and risks in blockchain!

Have an awesome weekend,
Shuo

3D Printing - Startup Digest - Yo! - June 23rd - June 30th

Startup Digest

3D Printing

June 23, 2017

Hey you scallywag!

Hope you enjoyed the break last week. I skipped last week because news was light in the world of 3D printing.

Right now, I am at Vidcon, learning about the latest in online video. I'll be back in San Diego on Monday.

A few days ago, I tried Kambo and it was incredibly uncomfortable (and interesting). It's essentially a (legal) frog poison that certain Amazonian tribes use for spiritual journeys.

A hippie friend of mine convinced me to try the medicine so I tried it. It involved a lot of vomiting (expected) and pain for about 30 minutes and I am still trying to understand WTF happened. :P

That's what I've been up to lately.

As far as 3D Printing goes, we'll be covering:

1.) M3D's new open source, industrial printer
2.) A TSA incident involving a mouse penis
3.) Divergent3D's 3D Printed car
4.) 3D Printing functional cameras
5.) Robo3D's expansion
6.) Helping ducks with 3D Printing
7.) A filament kickstarter
8.) ...and some Interviews.

That's it.

How have you been? Up to anything interesting?

Perhaps you have some questions or comments?

As always, hit me up by hitting reply to this email.

Until next time, my friend,
Dilanka

[PRODUCT / NEWS] - M3D Releases its First Industrial, Open Source 3D Printer

M3d - printm3d.com

One of the more interesting announcements recently.

[ARTICLE] - TSA Finds Scientists 3D Printed Mouse Penis

Ed Yong - theatlantic.com

It would have been fun to stand behind this guy in line. Very amusing.

[ARTICLE] - How This $28 Million Startup Hopes to Save the World With 3D Printing

Stephen Bronner - entrepreneur.com

I've covered Divergent 3D before and looks like their marketing team is doing a great job with getting their product out. The fact that they managed to get Jay Leno (who is a car nut) to cover it is arguably one of the best strategies I've seen for a company like Divergent3D. Kudos.

[ARTICLE] - This Guy 3D Printed a Camera Because He Couldn't Afford One

Michael Zhang - petapixel.com

Obviously doesn't include the lens, but still impressive.

[NEWS] - Robo 3D to Scale up Production with $1.8 Million Funding

Corey Clarke - 3dprintingindustry.com

Cool to see Robo3D still kicking. Although, they got a bit of heat on Twitter by for a tweet they made.

[CASE STUDY] - Helping Injured Ducks with 3D Printing

Poultry DVM - duckdvm.com

There's plenty of cases of 3D Printing helping animals, and it's always fun to see these real life case studies.

[KICKSTARTER] - 3D Bio-Compostible Filament

Ken Aiken - kickstarter.com

The Kickstarter title sucks (too geeky) and will likely lose a lot of people, but it's still interesting. The funding goal is also quite high at > $450K. If you are interested, check it out.

[NEWS] - Contour Crafting Produces Robotic Construction 3D Printers

Clare Scott - 3dprint.com

This company allegedly is working on 3D Printers that can print (using concrete and other materials) a livable house/habitat in 24-48 hours.

[INTERVIEW SERIES] - Next 5 Years by Christopher Elsworthy of CEL Robox

3DPI - 3dprintingindustry.com

Good interview from this continuing series. CEL Robox makes REALLY interesting, well engineered machines. I've used them myself.

[INTERVIEW SERIES] - The Next 5 Years by Lee-Bath Nelson Co-Founder LEO Lane

3DPI - 3dprintingindustry.com

Another good interview from the series.

How to Present Your Startup Financials in Just 3 Slides

Now Hiring! - Techstars Program Manager, Berlin

Along with the Managing Director, the Program Manager (“PM”) is tasked with the success of a particular Techstars program. This opportunity affords high visibility and responsibility as the PM works side by side with a prominent Managing Director, helping early stage companies through the Techstars mentorship driven accelerator model.

Why Does My Engineer Care So Much About a Few Milliseconds?

Adam Berlinsky-Schine

Software engineers place a lot of emphasis on code performance. There is often tension between non-engineers who want more time to be spent on building new features and engineers who want to spend time on improving performance. The app seems perfectly fast to you. So why do engineers care so much about shaving a few milliseconds off of something that already seems to be pretty good?

It's Never Too Early to Fire

Lars Dalgaard

"Using the NPV analogy, every minute you're not doing something, you are compounding the negative growth (not just money, not just time), because people are losing faith in you as a leader. In fact that's a higher cost than any of the other losses because it becomes a systemic, organization-wide problem: the company that employees no longer trust, that no longer demands or values their highest performance."

Beyond the Fairy Tale Narrative

Adam Smith

"The idea that you can sell a startup and then "live happily ever after" post-acquisition, in particular, is a dangerous myth."

Cofounder Disputes and Making Something People Want

Jessica Livingston

In this excerpt from Jessica's talk at the 2014 Female Founders Conference, she discusses the two most common reasons startups fail: cofounder disputes and not making something people want.
