Health Reading List | April 24, 2015 | Happy Friday all,
This week's digest has a bit of a telemedicine and mHealth theme. There were a few key pieces of telehealth legislature this week: some spurred on and others curbed telemedicine innovation, and a great report on all the mHealth sensors out there today. I also wanted to throw in some AACR and Cancer news, so you'll see some pieces on that.
Startup Highlight: YoDerm
Given all the telehealth news this week, I wanted to highlight a great Bay Area based telemedicine company trying to make sure we can all have great skin without visiting a dermatologist, YoDerm. They've been getting some good coverage lately for their low-cost, high-quality telederm solution that gives users a consultation that is as easy as uploading a photo. One of the co-founders has a great opinion piece you can check out, here.

Lacktman - National Law Review The so-called "Doc Fix" bill has a number of important implications, one of which is it's focus on reimbursement for telehealth services given their inclusion as "Clinical Practice Improvement Activities." As we have seen in states like Mississippi, the impact of telehealth on delivering low-cost, democratized care will be immense. | | HITC Staff - HIT Consultant And to tie the theme together, Geisinger announced the opening of a "telegenomics" program to bring precision medicine to the masses. Mind. Blown. | | Republican Press Office - C-SPAN Telehealth cannot exist without increases broadband-level internet availability in rural areas. While archived C-SPAN recordings are generally enough to put one to sleep, this is a great inside look at the prospective regulation and the importance of broadband and communications in the rise of telehealth. | | Eric J. Topol, Evan D. Muse, Steven R. Steinhubl - Scripps Translational Science Institute Obviously mHealth is huge with almost $1B in funding according to this study. Eric Topol et. al have this in-depth overview of all that is mHealth along with a great view of available sensors by area of the body being monitored. The authors do clearly mention that there is still a lot of room for improvement when it comes to the evidence of clinical evidence. | | Amy Standon - KQED Science Amy Standon has a story here about the human side of mHealth and how it is helping dementia care. We hear about how mHealth is impacting medicine through more accurate, innovative sensors, but this story focuses on the low hanging fruit that mHealth help with. | | Matthew Herper - Forbes With AACR this week, this digest would be incomplete without articles mentioning some of the great technologies being developed in the fight against cancer. This study conducted by Bristol-Meyers Squib was arguably one of the most eye catching. It is a small study, but a shocking 22% of the patient's had a complete response (i.e. melted tumors). More to come, but the combination of such potent drugs with genetic testing is incredibly promising! | | Gina Kolata - New York Times The power of genetic testing for cancer treatment has been getting a lot of press lately, with big players like Guardant Health making headway. This article from New York Times outlines the work being done by physicians at Sloan Kettering and Johns Hopkins to hone this process to give patients much earlier warning of life threatening cancers. | | Brian Gormley - WSJ While Rock Health and Startup Health reported Q1 '15 digital health funding was down vs. Q1 '14, DowJones Venture Source showed a record $3.9B in health funding (which includes medical device, biotech, pharma, and "other"). Interesting to compare this number, with the Rock Health/Startup Health numbers (as well as the general venture funding, which is at a 15 year high). | | Jon Stewart, Daily Show - Comedy Central And finally for some Friday Fun, watch Jon Stewart lament the "celebration" of congress simply doing their job. Enjoy!! | | StartUp Health - StartUp Health While some genetic tests are helping us fight cancer, there are of course a number of health companies focused on making precision medicine a widely available health care option. Start Up Health's weekly video cast interviews Tute Genomic's CEO Dr. Reid Robison about the future of genomics and how every physician will one day be a geneticist to provide incredibly individualized medicine. | Tech Entrepreneurs + Small Businesses = Real Solutions.
