3D Printing Reading List

April 03, 2015

Hold on, because we're going to bounce around a lot this week. We kick things off with a look at the 3D printing industry- now clocking in at $3.3B- which is growing at a >50% rate year over year. Desktop 3D printing and applications are driving all that growth, to the point where it's capturing the imagination.  Nothing says mainstream more than Facebook integration- and now you can see your 3D Printable models on your Facebook wall, thanks to Sketchfab.  Think you'll see more 3D printed guns there? Maybe you'll see the new printable lower for your CM109 rifle, which makes it possible to fire 7.62mm rounds. Personally we hope you'll see more things like NASA's new 3D printable tour of the Vesta asteroid (on which the EU space agency landed a proble). We leave you with a great talk from TeVido about bioprinting breast tissue, which promises to help millions of women recovering from breast cancer.

Enjoy!

Great, now 3D-printed rifles can fire larger, deadlier rounds

Andrew Tarantola - engadget.com

This year, designers from FOSSCAD has raised the bar yet again. They've successfully crafted and test fired the receiver for a Colt CM109 modular battle rifle -- the AR-15's badass big brother. The CM109 is larger and heavier than the AR-15 as it is built to accommodate a larger caliber round: the 7.62 x 51mm NATO. The 7.62mm rounds fly farther and strike with much more force than the 5.56mm, making them far more deadly.

TeVido Delves into the Benefits of 3D Bioprinting Breast Tissue

LAURA KOBYLECKY - 3dprintingindustry.com

I was fortunate enough to attend "3D Bioprinting: The Next Revolution in Healthcare", a discussion presented by Laura Bosworth, CEO and co-founder of TeVido BioDevices, and CTO Dr. Scott Collins. This particular session was quite full and eventually had to turn people away, which indicates that there is high interest in the topic. Hype is common in this environment, but the potential ramifications that 3D printing can have on the medical field are genuine. The hype here might be justified.

NASA Unveils 'Vesta Trek' App, Allows Virtual Tour & 3D Printing of Enormous Asteroid

BRIDGET BUTLER MILLSAPS - 3dprint.com

Although Vesta, a minor planet and the second largest object in the asteroid belt, is able to be viewed by the naked eye intermittently, NASA is making it easy for you to get up close and personal with this enormous celestial body in a new web-based app called 'Vesta Trek,' which is space age in itself. If that isn't quite enough, and if you possess the technological savvy and the equipment, you can also use the app to 3D print Vesta yourself for further long-term topographical inspection.

3D printing market hits $3.3B worldwide

Eileen Yu - zdnet.com

The 3D printing market has generated revenues totaling US$3.3 billion last year, up 34 percent from 2013, as prices fall and more consumers make their first purchase in this segment.According to market researcher Canalys, nearly 133,000 3D printers were shipped globally in 2014, a 68 percent increase over the previous year. Revenue from the market included associated materials and services.

3D Printing Firm ExOne Faces Financial Reporting Trouble

zacks.com

The ExOne Company (XONE), a leading provider of 3D printing machines & products, materials and services, made a shocking revelation while filing its 10K report for 2014. The company announced facing "material weaknesses" in internal controls over financial reporting, especially in areas of design and operating effectiveness. This disagreeable piece of information came as a direct violation of Section 404(a) of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, which requires all companies to develop an effective internal control during financial reporting & disclosure of controls and procedures.
