Ruby on Rails and Cloudinary - image management for an amazing web-dev framework

Nadav Soferman

"Cloudinary's Rails community includes active Ruby on Rails developers who use Cloudinary's APIs to streamline and manage their image lifecycle on their sites and web applications. In fact, approximately 33% of Cloudinary's paying customers use Ruby on Rails. Therefore, we are pleased to be a part of this year's RailsConf in Atlanta, presenting how simple it is to handle image uploads, manipulation and delivery in Rails applications with Cloudinary."

Announcing Azure Service Fabric: Reducing Complexity in a Hyper-scale World

Mark Russinovich

"Today we are excited to announce an additional offering – Azure Service Fabric – that provides a high control platform that enables developers and ISVs to build cloud services with a high degree of scalability and customization. Service Fabric was born from our years of experience delivering mission-critical cloud services and has been in production for more than five years. It provides the foundational technology upon which we run our Azure core infrastructure and also powers services like Skype for Business, InTune, Event Hubs, DocumentDB, Azure SQL Database and Bing Cortana."

Docs, Sheets and Forms add-ons now open to all developers

Saurabh Gupta

"Back in 2014, we introduced add-ons for Google Docs, Sheets, and Forms in developer preview. Since then, the developer community has built a wide variety of features to help millions of Docs, Sheets and Forms users become more productive. Over the last few months, we launched a number of developer-friendly features that made it easier to build, test, deploy and distribute add-ons. Starting today, any developer can publish an add-on."

Using RequireJS with Visual Studio

Jordan Matthiesen

"Visual Studio provides great JavaScript editor support for RequireJS, with IntelliSense that can discover the modules of your application and provide accurate suggestions. If you use TypeScript, there's built-in support for modules to compile into JavaScript that works with RequireJS. This post walks you through using RequireJS in Visual Studio with either JavaScript or TypeScript."

Creating a Web App From Scratch Using AngularJS and Firebase: Part 5

Jay Raj

"This post is part of a series called Creating a Web App From Scratch Using AngularJS and Firebase.

In the previous part of the series, we designed and implemented an interface to create a blog post with a title and post. In this part, we'll see how to fetch the blog posts saved in Firebase and render them on our welcome page."

Interactive Drag and Drop Coloring Concept

Mary Lou

"Today we would like to share a fun interactive coloring concept with you. The idea is to simply drag a color from a color palette to a website mockup and color designated areas of it (like sections or texts). You might have encountered customization tools before, but we wanted to add some fun to this idea and make it enjoyable to use."

Your Password is Too Damn Short

Jeff Atwood

"I'm a little tired of writing about passwords. But like taxes, email, and pinkeye, they're not going away any time soon. Here's what I know to be true, and backed up by plenty of empirical data:

No matter what you tell them, users will always choose simple passwords.

No matter what you tell them, users will re-use the same password over and over on multiple devices, apps, and websites. If you are lucky they might use a couple passwords instead of the same one.

What can we do about this as developers?"

Startup Reading List - Startup Digest - Thank you! - April 24th - May 1st

Startup Digest Startup Digest Startup Digest

Startup Reading List

April 24, 2015

Last week we made a little joke in terms of feedback. Boy did we ask for it. We got hit on email, Twitter, and a few of you even tried smoke signals (yes, we saw your effort but couldn't decipher).

Feedback is important to us because we can tell that many of you are opening this digest on a weekly basis... 12,067 last week to be exact... about a 20% open rate which we are told isn't too bad.

We want to ensure you are getting value from the digest. Reading articles that are worth your time and ensuring you know what you are getting into. If you are  thinking about a venture, we hope the digest gives you some insight. If you are in the middle of your startup journey, perhaps one article could be the difference you are looking for. Or if you are simply interested in this space, perhaps these articles have helped you find new found respect for the those who dare to do.

Entrepreneurship is a life style decision with few rainbows, lots of heartbreak and a couple of unicorns. Think Game of Thrones not The Social Network.

Love you all,

Your curators

What Founders Should Know Before They Raise VC...

Bhavin Parikh

"Raising money, while alluring, signs us up for a very high-growth trajectory—that's the promise we'd be making to the investors whose money we'd take. And right now, I believe our business, employees, and customers are best served if we continue with our current growth path."

Little Things

Ben Horowitz

"You should set high-level goals, but those goals will or will not be achieved by the organization that you assigned them to. If you want to help them reach their goals, do so by focusing on the little things."

Pitch Perfect – Keep it Simple, Stupid

Micah Baldwin

"Next time you are eating in a busy restaurant, stop your server and pitch your company. If s/he stops, thinks and asks a good question, then your words are the star. If they hurry off or look confused, then make sure your deck is the star."

Health Reading List - Startup Digest - mHealth, Telehealth, and AACR - April 24th - May 1st

Startup Digest Startup Digest Startup Digest

Health Reading List

April 24, 2015

Happy Friday all,

This week's digest has a bit of a telemedicine and mHealth theme. There were a few key pieces of telehealth legislature this week: some spurred on and others curbed telemedicine innovation, and a great report on all the mHealth sensors out there today. I also wanted to throw in some AACR and Cancer news, so you'll see some pieces on that.

Startup Highlight: YoDerm

Given all the telehealth news this week, I wanted to highlight a great Bay Area based telemedicine company trying to make sure we can all have great skin without visiting a dermatologist, YoDerm. They've been getting some good coverage lately for their low-cost, high-quality telederm solution that gives users a consultation that is as easy as uploading a photo. One of the co-founders has a great opinion piece you can check out, here.

As always, if you come across news, announcements, videos, or podcasts that you think everyone else would benefit from, e-mail me at scott.munro@startupdigesemail.com or tweet @R_Scott_Munro.

Does the "Doc Fix" Bill Help Telemedicine and Telehealth?

Nathaniel M. Lacktman - National Law Review

The so-called "Doc Fix" bill has a number of important implications, one of which is it's focus on reimbursement for telehealth services given their inclusion as "Clinical Practice Improvement Activities." As we have seen in states like Mississippi, the impact of telehealth on delivering low-cost, democratized care will be immense.

Geisinger Opens Genomic Research Center, Houses Telegenomics Program

HITC Staff - HIT Consultant

And to tie the theme together, Geisinger announced the opening of a "telegenomics" program to bring precision medicine to the masses. Mind. Blown.

Advancing Telehealth Through Connectivity

Republican Press Office - C-SPAN

Telehealth cannot exist without increases broadband-level internet availability in rural areas. While archived C-SPAN recordings are generally enough to put one to sleep, this is a great inside look at the prospective regulation and the importance of broadband and communications in the rise of telehealth.

The emerging field of mobile health

Eric J. Topol, Evan D. Muse, Steven R. Steinhubl - Scripps Translational Science Institute

Obviously mHealth is huge with almost $1B in funding according to this study. Eric Topol et. al have this in-depth overview of all that is mHealth along with a great view of available sensors by area of the body being monitored. The authors do clearly mention that there is still a lot of room for improvement when it comes to the evidence of clinical evidence.

Using Technology to Help in Dementia Care

Amy Standon - KQED Science

Amy Standon has a story here about the human side of mHealth and how it is helping dementia care. We hear about how mHealth is impacting medicine through more accurate, innovative sensors, but this story focuses on the low hanging fruit that mHealth help with.

Immune System Drugs Melt Tumors In New Study, Leading A Cancer Revolution

Matthew Herper - Forbes

With AACR this week, this digest would be incomplete without articles mentioning some of the great technologies being developed in the fight against cancer. This study conducted by Bristol-Meyers Squib was arguably one of the most eye catching. It is a small study, but a shocking 22% of the patient's had a complete response (i.e. melted tumors). More to come, but the combination of such potent drugs with genetic testing is incredibly promising!

New Blood Test Shows Promise in Cancer Fight

Gina Kolata - New York Times

The power of genetic testing for cancer treatment has been getting a lot of press lately, with big players like Guardant Health making headway. This article from New York Times outlines the work being done by physicians at Sloan Kettering and Johns Hopkins to hone this process to give patients much earlier warning of life threatening cancers.

Health-Care Startups Raise Record $3.9 Billion in Venture Capital in First Quarter

Brian Gormley - WSJ

While Rock Health and Startup Health reported Q1 '15 digital health funding was down vs. Q1 '14, DowJones Venture Source showed a record $3.9B in health funding (which includes medical device, biotech, pharma, and "other"). Interesting to compare this number, with the Rock Health/Startup Health numbers (as well as the general venture funding, which is at a 15 year high).

Some Friday Fun: Daily Show and "Doc Fix"

Jon Stewart, Daily Show - Comedy Central

And finally for some Friday Fun, watch Jon Stewart lament the "celebration" of congress simply doing their job. Enjoy!!

StartUp Health NOW! #28: Funding the Future of Digital Health - Reid Robison, MD, Tute Genomics

StartUp Health - StartUp Health

While some genetic tests are helping us fight cancer, there are of course a number of health companies focused on making precision medicine a widely available health care option. Start Up Health's weekly video cast interviews Tute Genomic's CEO Dr. Reid Robison about the future of genomics and how every physician will one day be a geneticist to provide incredibly individualized medicine.

Now You Can Download Your Google History—Or Better Yet, Delete It

GIZMODO

"Clearly, someone at Google knows how dangerous this information can be, which is why they created the message you can read above. "It's not the usual yada yada," indeed. If you're going to download it, keep it safe. If you're willing to trust Google with this information, you should at least do as the company advises and set up two-factor authentication for some beefed up security."

Nokia Plots 2016 Return to Phone Market

Recode

"The move is driven by Nokia Technologies — the smallest of the three businesses that remained after the Microsoft deal, alongside its mapping and network equipment businesses. Nokia Technologies is best known for being the arm that licenses the company's massive portfolio of more than 10,000 patents."

Facebook Hello shows who's calling your Android phone

Engadget

"As helpful as it is, caller ID doesn't really tell you everything about who's ringing your phone or why. Is it an acquaintance? A best friend's birthday? Or a robocaller? Facebook might have a better solution. It's rolling out Hello, the previously leaked Android caller ID app."

Coin, The One Credit Card To Rule Them All, Is Finally Shipping

Tech Crunch

"Coin works by letting you add all of your debit, credit, and loyalty cards onto one piece of technology, the Coin."

Using Chrome DevTools to Debug JavaScript in Any Browser with Ghostlab 2

Andi Dysart and Matthias Christen

"Modern desktop browsers offer powerful integrated developer tools that let you get to the bottom of CSS or JavaScript problems quickly. Whether it's Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, or Safari, you will be able to inspect the DOM, apply CSS modifications in real-time, browse through loaded script files, set breakpoints to manually control the flow of execution and trace any exception or unexpected behaviour to its cause."

When AES Encryption Isn't Very Good

Brian Lewis

"We all know that encryption is complicated but most people think that because they are using AES, Blowfish, IDEA, or some other advanced encryption then the data is secure. Well it's more complicated than that. Not only do you have to look at the key size like 128 bit, 256 bit, etc., but another really important piece is the mode that the encryption uses. ECB mode has some serious problems because it is poor at hiding data patterns. There are a lot of software packages that offer strong AES encryption but use EBC mode and therefore aren't that strong."
