Y Combinator's Founding Principles

Paul Graham, Jessica Livingston, Robert Morris, and Trevor Blackwell

"We must remember that we're investors, not bosses. We can advise and persuade, but not command. Good founders don't need more than advice anyway. And since you can't know what it's like to start a startup without having done it, those who advise the founders should be mostly people who have."

What Founders Really Want from VCs

Fred Destin

"Young startups often don't realize how attractive they are, and what calibre of people they are able to attract. This is one area where a passionate investor can really make a difference in closing amazing candidates. Getting great talent early is priceless."

How to Build a Billion Dollar Digital Marketplace

Andrew Chen

"As you might imagine, breaking into each new local market can be incredibly painful. Marketplace companies often end up employing teams of "launchers," a specialized ops role focused on cracking new cities."

VC Math

Homan Yuen

"As a general comparison, LPs can obtain 1.5x returns after 10 years on many different types of asset classes including private equity, public equities, and real estate. LPs look to venture capital to provide premium returns due to the increased risk and illiquidity of the asset class. For riskier and longer term investments like seed funds, LPs expect an even higher premium. Otherwise, there is no financial reason to give money to venture firms. Historically, many venture funds do fail to hit these targets, and a large proportion also fail to return 1.5x or even 1.0x."

Startup Digest - 3D Printing - Happy Halloween! - October 27th

Startup Digest

3D Printing

October 27, 2017

Yo!

Watcha up to?

In the midst of all of this Harvey Weinstein news, I came across an interesting documentary called An Open Secret -- check if out if you get a chance.

Anyway, hope you enjoy today's digest.

As always, if you have any questions/comments or news items that I didn't cover, hit me up.

Until next time, my friend,
Dilanka

Contemplation:

"..You know, most people don't know the difference between apple cider and apple juice, but I do. Now here's a little trick to help you remember. If it's clear and yella', you've got juice there, fella. If it's tangy and brown, you're in cider town. Now, there's two exceptions and it gets kinda tricky here…" -- Ned Flanders, Simpsons, 1996

[ARTICLE / VIDEO] - 7 Year Old Pitches at Baseball Game with 3D Printed Hand

Laura Griffiths - tctmagazine.com

I know I've covered 3D Printed prosthesis many many times.

Still, this is damn cool and adorable.

[ARTICLE] - 3D Printing Gives Hackers Entirely New Ways to Wreak Havoc

Alessandro Di Fiore - hbr.org

It's a great subject.

I only wish that the article was much longer and in depth.

[PRODUCT] - Prusa i3 MK3 Out

Josef Prusa - prusaprinters.com

This is arguably THE most popular open source printer at the moment.

Now, an upgrade for this series is available.

Worth checking out.

I've heard nothing but positive things about Prusa printers.

[PRODUCT] - Hexatope, an App That Lets You Design 3D Printable Jewelry

Hexatope - hexatope.io

As 3D printing becomes increasingly popular among a new generation of designers and jewelry makers, one London-based artist is exploring the possibilities of online co-creation and collaboration with her clients.

Hexatope is a new app that lets users experiment, develop, and design their own pendant necklace in 3D printed sterling silver or 18-carat gold plating.

Very interesting.

[KICKSTARTER] - Mooz: Industrial Grade Transformable Metallic 3D Printer

Kickstarter - kickstarter.com

Can't really vouch for quality, but just wanted to send this your way.

It's another Kickstarter that's doing quite well.

[PRODUCT] - Cross platform Desktop 3D Printing App

AstroPrint - medium.com

This was released this morning.

It's essentially a cross platform app that enhances your workflow while using your 3D Printer with the AstroPrint cloud.

[COURSE] - 3D Printing for Prototyping and Production

3D Print - 3dprint.com

This is a premium ($149) course that's meant to teach folks about 3D Printing.

It's interesting as I've seen only a few courses dedicated to 3D Printing.

The other (Free) course I know of is this one on Coursera

If you know of any others, please let me know.

[PRODUCT] - A Website for Trading Used 3D Printers

3D Printer Trade - 3dprintertrade.com

I came across this site accidentally.

Essentially, it was built by a member of the 3D Printing community to help people trade used 3D Printers easily.

Worth checking it out.

Also, it's just the first version, so expect bugs.

[COMPANY] - Ultimaker Gets Undisclosed Amount of Funding

Sam Davies - tctmagazine.com

I don't know precisely how much, but it looks like an undisclosed amount by a private equity firm.

Guide to launching an Initial Coin Offering (ICO)

Chris McCann

"On one-hand, you are selling future usage of your platform (not giving up equity). On the other-hand, you are becoming a public company on day one. You'll have a huge community you'll need to manage post-ICO, and you need to make sure you want to deal with this burden beforehand."

Service Recovery: Turn Unhappy Customers Into Loyal Fans

Harsh Vardhan

"No matter how bad the situation looks, remind yourself that the customer looks up to you to get their problem solved. You have to work with the customer and a little composure will go a long way in re-establishing their trust in you during the service recovery process."

Three Paths in the Tech Industry: Founder, Executive, or Employee

Michael Seibel

"Often times there are hard barriers preventing people from starting a company. In these cases my best advice is to move to a tech hub (preferably the Bay Area) and work for a tech company until you can save the money, make friends with the right potential teammates, or discover the problem that you are passionate about. It usually takes at least 10 years to build a large and impactful company. It's fine to delay your start date in order to give yourself the best chance of success."

How Facebook's VP of Product Finds Focus and Creates Conditions for Intentional Work

Fidji Simo

"We have the luxury of working in an industry where there are endless opportunities and low-hanging fruit lying everywhere. It's extremely tempting to do it all. But 'doing it all' is as impossible as it is impractical, particularly when you're building products. It's not just people who can lose focus — products can too."

Startup Digest - 3D Printing - Products & Kickstarters - October 20th

Startup Digest

3D Printing

October 20, 2017

Hey you!

What's new?

Up to anything cool or interesting?

I've been intensely studying Benjamin Grahams stuff lately.

Namely, The Intelligent Investor and Security Analysis.

If you do any sort of investing in the stock market (especially index funds / ETFs) -- Graham's stuff is a must read.

That's what I am up to. (Also a few audiobooks)

Watcha up to?

(Yes, I am really asking, so if you are up to anything cool, hit reply to this email)

Anyway, enjoy today's digest.

Until next time, my friend,
Dilanka

Solid interview.

[DIY / HOW TO] - How to Waterproof your 3D Prints

General Fabb - fabbaloo.com

If you've ever wondered if you could waterproof a 3D Print, this is a good preview of the challenges.

[PRODUCT] - Ultimaker Releases CURA 3.0

Ultimaker - ultimaker.com

It's finally out.

[PRODUCT] - 3D Printable File Repair Using CURA + MakePrintable

Fabbaloo - solidsmack.com

Interesting solution for repairing 3D Printable files.

[PRODUCT] - Makerbot Releases 'Makerbot Labs'

Makerbot - makerbot.com

So, this is allegedly a collaboration platform for developers, engineers, and designers. I don't know if I should be worried that Makerbot is behind it though.

Either way, looks like they are still kicking -- even with a pissed off user base.

[KICKSTARTER] - 2nd Gen New Matter Mod-t 3D Printer

New Matter - kickstarter.com

One of the coolest looking 3D Printers just started another crowdfunding campaign for the next generation of it's printer.

Although, I am not quite sure why they are doing another crowdfunding campaign as they are an established company with an already successful crowdfunding campaign (that raised $600k+) from 2014.

[KICKSTARTER] - Voladd: The First Fully Integrated 3D Printer

Voladd - kickstarter.com

This is an interesting project out of Spain.

Accelerate Your Startup: Apply to Techstars by October 15th

It’s all about the network. Whether you’re fundraising, expanding to a new region, or looking for new bizdev opportunities, the Techstars Worldwide Network of founders, mentors, investors, and industry leaders is there to support you. Techstars applications are open through October 15th for programs worldwide. Pick your city and program - apply today!

Essential Startup Advice

Geoff Ralston and Michael Seibel

"When it comes to customers most founders don't realize that they get to choose customers as much as customers get to choose them. We often say that a small group of customers who love you is better than a large group who kind of like you. In other words, recruiting 10 customers who have a burning problem is much better than 1000 customers who have a passing annoyance."

Engineering Org from 0 to 300 People

Mike Krieger

"One of our themes was being the fastest photo-sharing app in the world. What are we working toward within that theme? Next, we wanted to make the photos look incredible, way beyond what you'd expect from a cell phone. What are we doing on that? Anything that didn't fit into those things went by the wayside. And you want engineers who are okay with that."

Incorporation, Convertible Debt & Series A

Dave Parker

"Keep in mind, these early investors are taking the most risk at this stage of your company and most don't want to simply get paid back their principal and interest. They are looking to actually own the stock."

Behind the scenes with Deliveroo

Rohan Pradhan

"This was a chance to rebuild something that I'd always wanted to do, to create selection where it didn't exist."

Startup Digest - 3D Printing - Yo! - October 13th

Startup Digest

3D Printing

October 13, 2017

Happy Friday, you Scallywag!

How are ya?

Hope you are well.

Due to my insomnia, I finished this digest up at around 5AM with no sleep and having to go to a early morning meeting at 8AM.

So, instead of the usual dribble about what I am up to, I am going to leave you with a classic song and the digest itself.

(Mostly because I could barely type)

Enjoy!

Until next time, my friend,
Dilanka

P.S: As always, feel free to hit me up for whatever reason by hitting reply to this email.

[NEWS] - HP Inc. Plans a Push Into 3D Printers That Create Metal Objects

Jonathan Vanian - fortune.com

Looks like HP is going to focus a lot more on mass market metal 3D Printing.

[KICKSTARTER] - Cubibot: The new standard of modern consumer 3D printer

Cubibot - kickstarter.com

Here's another 3D Printer Kickstarter that's kicking ass at the moment.

[NEWS] - Can you 3D print a bump fire stock?

John Hornick - policeone.com

This is related to the recent, horrific Las Vegas shooting and 3D Printing.

It's an interesting topic that brings up 3D Printable weapons yet again to the conversation.

What do you think about people being able to 3D Print untraceable weapons in the future? For it? Against it? Don't care?

[NEWS] - Impossible Objects Raises $6.4 Million in Series A

Beau Jackson - 3dprintingindustry.com

Composite-based additive manufacturing (CBAM) developer Impossible Objects has announced the raising of $6.4 million in series A funding. The sum means that, to date, the company has secured a total of $9.2 million in investment led by tech equity specialist OCA Ventures.

[PRODUCT] - 3D Print Dental Splints in Less Than 50 Minutes

Formlabs - formlabs.com

This is quite cool. It's a new long-term bio-compatible resin (called Dental LT Clear) for Desktop 3D Printers. You can print splits, retainers, and other dental related devices straight at home (or as a dentist).

[PRODUCT] - AstroPrint releases 3D Printer management app for Android & iOS

AstroPrint - blog.astroprint.com

If you are interested in managing your 3D Printer from your smartphone from anywhere around the world, this might be of interest to you.

It's an Android + iOS app that does just that.

[PRODUCT] - Solidworks 2018 Launched

Solidworks - solidworks.com

FYI, Dassault recently announced the release of Solidworks 2018.

I personally like Fusion 360 or even Onshape (cloud based CAD software) -- but Solidworks has a HUGE existing audience, especially in the industrial sector.

[PRODUCT] - A new handheld 3D Scanner called Peel

General Fabb - fabbaloo.com

3D Scanners essentially allow you to scan any physical object and reproduce a digital, 3D file that could theoretically be 3D Printed/Fabricated.

This is another interesting product designed to do just that.

[TOOL] - STL Garden

Matt Rayfield - stl.garden

This is a cool tool developed by an independent developer.

Essentially, it shows the latest 3D Files that were uploaded to Github.

Very cool for a first version project.
