Startup Digest

Enterprise

May 31, 2017

Hi everyone,

Apologies for the silence! I've been traveling in Europe with the IEEE, who just hosted a series of great startup events. Will be sure to tell you about them in advance next time and hope to meet more of you in person.

Here's the promised update on Google's Female Founders Summit taking place June 1-2. The event will feature in-depth talks with successful female entrepreneurs, fireside chats with investors and startup sessions with some of the best of Google and Silicon Valley.

Speakers from Google include Dr. Anna Patterson (Google's VP of Engineering), Laura Thompson (Investor at Google Ventures and former Product Manager at GoogleX), Purnima Kochikar (Director of Google Play, Apps & Games), and Punit Aggarwal (Google's Head of Entrepreneur Development).

Female founders who will be speaking include Masha Sedova from Elevate Security (she was a security executive at Salesforce and is a member of the Board of Directors for the National Cyber Security Alliance), Nancy Hua from Apptimize (she was featured on Forbe's 30 Under 30 in 2015), and Nicole Chiu-Wang from Boon+Gable (she is a founder, lawyer, front-end developer, and was crowned Miss Los Angeles County in 2007).

You can apply for an invitation to this great event here.

Have an awesome week,
Shuo

The Unbundling Of Excel

In January 2010, Andrew Parker wrote a post called the Spawn of Craigslist. Andrew identified companies that had built businesses by unbundling Craigslist. The vacation rentals link gave rise to AirBnB and HomeAway. Etsy dominated the arts and crafts for sale. This same unbundling is occurring to Excel.

Customer Data Platforms: The Next Big Shift in SaaS Marketing Stacks?

The current structure of the modern marketing stack leads to a large amount of data fragmentation. As we collect more and more data, it's becoming increasingly hard to piece together and manage that data, and more importantly, to use that data in real-time to build better campaigns.

3D Printing - Startup Digest - Happy Memorial Day! - May 26th - June 2nd

Startup Digest

3D Printing

May 26, 2017

Yo!

Memorial Day is coming up -- if you are in the U.S.

I've been hunting for some incredible documentaries (my favorite genre of media) lately, so if you know of any, feel free to send them my way.

I've been busy with the AstroBox Touch kickstarter lately, and the whole thing is scheduled to end in a few weeks.

Other than that, nothing much going on in my world.

Anything new in your world?

Let me know.

Today's digest is super light.

Enjoy!

Until next time, my friend,
Dilanka

Fidget Spinner Design

Thingiverse - thingiverse.com

So, I finally bit the bullet on the fidget spinner craze that's sweeping through the United States/World. Turns out, Walmart & Toys R Us are AIRLIFTING these things from china to maintain demand. Millions of units are expected to be sold this year.

Anyway, the cool thing is, as long as you buy some cheap bearings from china, you can 3D Print the fidget spinner itself.

Just in case you need an idea, this is the design I use.

Interesting. Although, if the stolen CAD Model is a simple household object (as opposed to a mission critical part) like a smartphone holder, I am not sure if I would care about the object being low quality.

Fooled by Experts

Aaron Harris

"Coming up with questions is a good sign of creativity, while answering them well builds the expertise necessary to actually get something done."

Investor VCs and Operator VCs

Fred Wilson

"I think of strategy as the opposite of execution. Strategy is about setting the stage for execution. Many of the best strategic minds I know aren't operators. They are consultants, analysts, investors, pundits. I don't know exactly why brilliant strategists often make terrible operators but I see it all the time."

Launching in the US: Salaries, PTOs & Perks

Will Gibbs

"The US job market is normally cited as setting salary levels above those for similar roles in different geographies. However, it is hard to generalise as there are significant variances in the US depending on the city, role and level of seniority. For example, the average salary for a developer in Palo Alto is $120k compared to $80k in Texas."

Startup Funding Mechanics: Incorporation, Convertible Debt & Series A

Dave Parker

"When you incorporate your company the value or basis of the stock is (hopefully) the least it will ever be. At that point in time, you are granting Issued shares to the founders. This grant is in exchange for an Assignment Agreement and anticipated work to be contributed to the organization."

Founder Stories: Kate Heddleston of Opsolutely

Craig Cannon and Kate Heddleston

"The main learning from my communication degree is that people treat computers the way they treat humans because we do not have special pathways in our brains for how we communicate with inanimate objects vs. animate objects. One of the best examples of this is how we treat dogs like humans. We anthropomorphize everything."

Your User Acquisition Funnel

Ruchi Thukral

"A job to be done (JTBD) is when a potential customer struggles to complete a task, or job, and has no viable solution in sight. Their ultimate goal is to overcome this struggle and by doing so increase their quality of life."

5 Tips for Building a Financial Plan for Your Startup

Omry Ben David

"Imagine business momentum is terrific and customers sign on at an unbelievable clip. Sounds great, right? Well, it depends. What if I tell you it costs you $100 to onboard a customer but you are only "making" $50 off that customer throughout their entire lifetime? Suddenly is doesn't sound too promising anymore."

This Sales Plan Moves the Needle on Every Success Metric

Derek Draper

"Now with so much information at their fingertips, buyers are often well-informed about a given product before they ever engage with a salesperson. Consequently, sellers need to transition from being information providers to a new role of being value-added consultants in order to succeed. Demonstrating that your product can help solve critical problems for a given customer is vital."

3D Printing - Startup Digest - Happy Mothers Day! - May 12th - May 19th

Startup Digest

3D Printing

May 12, 2017

Yo!

Phew, LOTS of stuff going on this week..

But, before we get started, why don't you warm up a bit by watching this guy smash a m****r*******g watermelon with a giant mousetrap.

Ready? Good.

These days, I am obsessed with a incredibly brilliant ex-professor called Jordan Peterson (check him out on the Joe Rogan Podcast) -- the guy's thinking is insanely clear.

As far as 3D Printing goes, there's plenty of news and events (like RAPID) happening this week.

Let's get to it...

Today, we'll be covering:

1.) A funny prank involving (pseudo) 3D Printing
2.) A new method for glass 3D Printing
3.) A new 3D Printer that prints stuff horizontally
4.) Home 3D Printers catching on fire..
5.) A couple of crowdfunding campaigns
6.) A student 3D printing retainers at home
7.) NASA's latest award
8.) Desktop Metal & Stratasys partnering
9.) Some updates from RAPID
10.) Ultimaker releasing cluster management software
11.) AstroPrint's new products
12.) Lulzbot & IC3D releasing open source filament
13.) A new 3D Printer

Man, that might be the most news highlights I've ever sent to you on this digest.

I hope you enjoyed that.

Also, happy mothers day to you and yours!
Until next time, my friend,
Dilanka

Just in case you haven't seen this, it's pretty hilarious.

[VIDEO] - 3D Printing Glass

Pretty damn cool.

[PRODUCT] - Blackbelt 3D Let's you 3D Print REALLY LONG objects

John Biggs - techcrunch.com

The product is allegedly going live on Kickstarter in the near future, so you cannot really buy it right now. With that said, it's a very cool concept.

[CASE STUDY] - Home 3D Printer Catching Fire

jaykoblanco - reddit.com

This is an interesting topic because most 3D Printers are NOT officially certified by a third party like UL. For example, your toaster is likely certified by UL to make sure it doesn't pose any electrical hazard.

The problem can get even worse when people are building their own 3D Printers without paying attention to electrical hazards. This is another case study on 3D Printer's catching on fire..

[INDIEGOGO] - Polaroid's 3D Printing Pen

Polaroid - indiegogo.com

It's interesting that Polaroid is using a crowdfunding approach here.

[KICKSTARTER] - AstroBox Touch: A Powerful Touchscreen for your 3D Printer

AstroPrint - kickstarter.com

The AstroBox Touch is a fully plug and play touchscreen for your 3D Printer that is wireless, cloud connected and infinitely extensible by installing 3D Printing related apps on it just like your smartphone. This campaign reached it's funding goal in just 3 hours after launch: Disclosure: I am directly involved with this project.

[NEWS] - Student 3D Prints Cheap Retainers to Fix His Crooked Teeth

Kathleen Villaluz - interestingengineering.com

Cool story.

[NEWS] - NASA Awards $100,000 in 3D-Printing Habitat Competition

Ian Oneill - space.com

NASA awarded $100,000 in 3D Printing Habitat Competition in it's first phase.

[NEWS] - Stratasys & Desktop Metal Partnership

General Fabb - fabbaloo.com

This partnership should certainly help Desktop Metal reach more folks.

[EVENT] - Updates from RAPID in Pittsburgh

Corey Clarke - 3dprintingindustry.com

Just in case you are not at RAPID, these are some solid updates of what's happening.

[PRODUCT] - Ultimaker Releases Printer Cluster Management Software

Lana Lozova - ultimaker.com

Interesting product release from Ultimaker.

[NEWS] - AstroPrint Announces The AstroBox Touch & More+

General Fabb - fabbaloo

One of the better overviews of the recent announcement(s) by AstroPrint.

[NEWS] + Lulzbot + IC3D Announces Open Source Filament

IC3DPrinters - github.com

Very interesting announcement by Lulzbot and IC3D. Just in case you are unfamiliar, Lulzbot (Aleph Objects) is MILITANT about open source software, so this is no surprise.

If you don't want to read that giant whitepaper, try this article for a good overview.

[PRODUCT] - Model One by Impossible Objects
