Startup Highlight: Cerora

Cerora, like a number of companies, is trying to make the "art" of concussion testing much more of a science. There is obviously a huge sports market that would love to get more insights into concussion protocols beyond the standard today, and Cerora hopes their sensors will help with those insights. See their CEO speak about the product, here.

The #JPM16 wrap: A new reality, Invitae's big test and Horizon's silence

The JP Morgan Healthcare Conference was this week which means lots of new announcements and lots of health enthusiasts in the SF. I swear I've never seen so many suits and ties near Union Square. Check out the overall wrap up above, and highlights from Day 1, Day 2, and Day 3.

Illumina's Bid to Beat Cancer with DNA Tests

The biggest news from JPM this week was Illumina announcing its official bid for the liquid biopsy market through Grail. Capturing the Value of MedTech Ingenuity The Case for Pricing Innovation

I'm a sucker for consulting reports. Here is one on pricing and offering innovation in the med device industry from Deloitte.

The Paradox of Size: How Small, Independent Practices Can Thrive in Value-Based Care

We all know about the move towards consolidation, but as the author notes, "from 2004 to 2011 hospital ownership of physician practices increased from 24% of practices to 49%.3 This consolidation does not appear to have resulted in lower prices, higher quality, or better care experiences." This is a great new look at what consolidation means. The author suggest small practices banding together without giving up the benefits of individual care. I think this is a must read.

California hospital becomes first in US to prescribe ingestible sensors from Proteus

Medication adherence accounts for a huge portion of health care costs in the united states, and for sometime Proteus Health has been working to address this problem. Now a health system has adopted their Proteus Discover technology!

CRISPR Dispute to Be Decided by Patent Office

Many would argue that CRISPR (especially beyond Cas9) is one of the greatest biotech discoveries of this still young century. The invention of the gene editing technique, however, is highly debated.

Google patents a wearable that tells you to take your medications when you eat

You can file this under "Google Betting More on Health Care", while Proteus and others work on medication adherence, Google thinks they can throw their hat in the ring as well.
