Startup Highlight: HemoShear Therapeutics

HemoShear is a biotech company that has created incredible human disease models that could drastically reduce the cost to develop drugs. Standard animal models just don't work very well, which is a large part of the cost associated with drug development. The closer we can get to mimicking human physiology while developing drugs, the more we can cut in terms of cost. If you'd like to learn more HemoShear was also featured on this week's Biotech Nation.

The Cancer Moonshot Task Force: Removing Bureaucratic Hurdles and Supporting Scientific Advances

What do you do after you're done being the VP of the free world? You lead a task force to end cancer, of course. The White House focus on precision medicine and cancer research isn't new, and frankly there is still a lot of question marks around whether or not precision medicine truly lowers cost burdens for the health care system. But you can read the VPOTUS' thoughts on the task force, here.

Move over Fitbit: Sweat-sensing bracelet could be next wearable tech

People who have subscribed to this digest for some time will know I am not a fan of the wearable hype; however, I AM a huge fan of biosensors that do more than simply track our steps, enter "sweat" sensors. A group from Berkeley is convinced that they can track all sorts of markers through sweat from electrolytes, to chemicals, proteins, and diseases. Just another step towards more meaningful biosensors.

A Bright Approach to Brain Implants

Using light to stimulate brain function could be the future... "This nascent technology is called optogenetics, and scientists are eager to explore it. The idea: Light-sensitive proteins are inserted into cells using gene therapy. Then neurons can be delicately activated or quieted using light patterns conveyed through implanted fiber optics. These patterns more accurately mimic the electrochemical pulses of the brain's language."

Scientists open the 'black box' of schizophrenia with dramatic genetic discovery

"For the first time, scientists have pinned down a molecular process in the brain that helps to trigger schizophrenia. The researchers involved in the landmark study, which was published Wednesday in the journal Nature, say the discovery of this new genetic pathway probably reveals what goes wrong neurologically in a young person diagnosed with the devastating disorder."

How Public / Private Accelerators are Fostering eHealth Innovation

A quick look at some of the public private partnerships that are making headway in healthcare innovation across the country.

The Neurologist Who Hacked His Brain—And Almost Lost His Mind

A great history of Phil Kennedy's work connecting human's to computers to help with disabilities, and his own experience "hacking" his brain. You can file this under "long reads."

Companies With Less Than 1 Year of Runway

Y Combinator

"Founders can get caught in a thought cycle which causes inaction and an inability to fix the situation they are in."

Turned a Deadly Plant Into a Thriving Business

Achenyo Idachaba

"A win-win solution whereby the environment is taken care of by the weeds being cleared out of the way and then this being turned into an economic benefit for the communities whose lives are impacted the most by the infestation of the weed. That, I would say, was my spark moment."

Christa Quarles

"If you try to put in a lot of process before any pain is felt, there won't be the urgency to do anything. And you'll drive away your engineers, who especially hate banal processes."

Startup Highlight: Save On Medical

There are a number of companies that are trying to make cost transparency easy for patients (which is no small task and a nut no one has really been able to crack). Save On has a fairly intuitive way for patients to quickly search for cheaper options, the big question will be: Can they create (or partner with an insurance provider to create) an incentive structure to make sure patients actually use their system.

Top 10 Reasons Doctors Fear Digital Health

Brennan Spiegal is one of the most realistic advocates for digital health (a term that can be met with disdain from practicing physicians). He tempers his excitement for the future of health care technology with the realities of patient care, physician demands, and the world of health care. Check out the biggest complaints he hears regarding digital health from practicing physicians, and his responses.

Direct-to-consumer genetic testing for predicting sports performance and talent identification: Consensus statement

There are a number of potential issues with DTC genetic testing: our lack of real insights into efficacy, potential harmful long term impacts of certain tests, etc. This article takes on a very small segment of DTC testing: Tests for "athletic ability" which are even more iffy than most. A fascinating read.

Stop Counting 10,000 Steps; Check Your Personal Activity Intelligence

I absolutely hate the "10,000" steps metric. It's the worst, at best it gets people to move more without any critical thought as to what sort of exercise we're doing, at worst it actively hurts our health outcomes.

This WSJ piece goes into another metric created by MIO called the "Personal Activity Intelligence" number which takes a more holistic approach to activity tracking. It's all really a stop gap until we have implants that track true fitness levels, food intake, etc.

Tiny electronic implants monitor brain injury, then melt away Read more: Tiny electronic implants monitor brain injury, then melt away

"A new class of small, thin electronic sensors can monitor temperature and pressure within the skull - crucial health parameters after a brain injury or surgery - then melt away when they are no longer needed, eliminating the need for additional surgery to remove the monitors and reducing the risk of infection and hemorrhage." No need for me to wax poetic about the importance of internal biosensors for this, I think you'll get the point.

StartUp Health NOW! #60: Innovating Healthcare Within Government - Susannah Fox, HHS

"Susannah Fox, CTO at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, talks about the many programs and initiatives within HHS; and inspiring entrepreneurs to focus on innovating within underserved communities."

FDA Wants Industry to Guard Against Cybersecurity Risks of Medical Devices

"We spoke to Russell Jones, partner with Deloitte & Touche, cyber risk leader for the firm's State of California Practice and co-leader of the firm's medical device safety and security practice, about the FDA actions, how these connected devices can be exploited by hackers, and what medical device makers can learn from industries that have already faced these issues."

Exclusive: Oscar Health Raising Giant Funding Round led by Fidelity

I don't usually include funding news in the digest, but this is egregious. As Christina Farr pointed out, Oscar would be valued at 3B with 125k members... Health Net has 6M members and a 6B valuation... some funny math there.

Startup Highlight: Cerora

Cerora, like a number of companies, is trying to make the "art" of concussion testing much more of a science. There is obviously a huge sports market that would love to get more insights into concussion protocols beyond the standard today, and Cerora hopes their sensors will help with those insights. See their CEO speak about the product, here.

Opportunity Is Knocking

Braintree recently teamed up with Vision Mobile, the world's largest developer survey, to look into untapped opportunities for mobile developers and the Internet of Things. They found that the upside of e-commerce is even bigger than you might think. Read more about the findings here.

The #JPM16 wrap: A new reality, Invitae's big test and Horizon's silence

The JP Morgan Healthcare Conference was this week which means lots of new announcements and lots of health enthusiasts in the SF. I swear I've never seen so many suits and ties near Union Square. Check out the overall wrap up above, and highlights from Day 1, Day 2, and Day 3.

Jonathan Bush even saved a life.

Illumina's Bid to Beat Cancer with DNA Tests

The biggest news from JPM this week was Illumina announcing its official bid for the liquid biopsy market through Grail. While there are plenty of players in this market already (Foundation, Guardant Health, Caris Life Sciences, etc), it's noteworthy because of their co-investors (Microsoft, Jeff Bezos) and the infrastructure they already have in place.

Capturing the Value of MedTech Ingenuity The Case for Pricing Innovation

I'm a sucker for consulting reports. Here is one on pricing and offering innovation in the med device industry from Deloitte.

The Paradox of Size: How Small, Independent Practices Can Thrive in Value-Based Care

We all know about the move towards consolidation, but as the author notes, "from 2004 to 2011 hospital ownership of physician practices increased from 24% of practices to 49%.3 This consolidation does not appear to have resulted in lower prices, higher quality, or better care experiences." This is a great new look at what consolidation means. The author suggest small practices banding together without giving up the benefits of individual care. I think this is a must read.

California hospital becomes first in US to prescribe ingestible sensors from Proteus

Medication adherence accounts for a huge portion of health care costs in the united states, and for sometime Proteus Health has been working to address this problem. Now a health system has adopted their Proteus Discover technology!

CRISPR Dispute to Be Decided by Patent Office

Many would argue that CRISPR (especially beyond Cas9) is one of the greatest biotech discoveries of this still young century. The invention of the gene editing technique, however, is highly debated.

Google patents a wearable that tells you to take your medications when you eat

You can file this under "Google Betting More on Health Care", while Proteus and others work on medication adherence, Google thinks they can throw their hat in the ring as well.

A Guide to Seed Fundraising

Geoff Ralston

"Ideally, you should raise as much money as you need to reach profitability, so that you'll never have to raise money again. If you succeed in this, not only will you find it easier to raise money in the future, you'll be able to survive without new funding if the funding environment gets tight."

How I've Connected With 27+ CEOs

Sam Parr

"If you take away one thing from this article, it's that you have to be ruthless about following up."

Startup Success That Feels Right

Joshua Reeves

"When I think about entrepreneurship, I think of it as a mindset. It's not necessarily about building a company. It's about not accepting the way that things work now, and instead thinking of how it could work."

Building a Bulletproof Comms Strategy

Caryn Marooney

"There's no reason for you to succeed. There is somebody out there who's bigger than you, who has a million more resources. That's always how it starts."
