Health Reading List August 28, 2015 Startup Highlight: Quanterix Quanterix has some impressive diagnostic technology that allows it "to trap single molecules in femtoliter-sized wells, allowing for a "digital" readout of each individual bead to determine if it is bound to the target analyte or not." For example the technology can enable clinicians to detect small amounts of proteins in concussion victims, even if the concussion is very minimal. Obviously, the applications go well beyond this... Modafinil is a medication prescribed for sleep conditions such as narcolepsy, but students, execs, and hacker types have documented taking the drug even when they're sleeping just fine—and getting brain enhancing effects as a result." Health Reading List August 21, 2015 Startup Highlight: Ixchel Scientific YC Demo Day was this week, and there were a surprising number of health care companies. In my mind, the coolest by far was Ixchel, which promises to predict how drugs will react in the human body (specifically for cancer drugs). Many companies are attacking the space (read about the Flatiron/Guardant Health Partnership here), but I'll be excited to see the progress Ixchel makes in the field. It could mean billions in savings around R&D spend. Much of this probably won't be news to folks, but it's worth a read. A Startup Is Pushing the Boundaries of Biology with Synthetic DNA People were super excited about 3D printed drugs... but synthetic DNA has the potential to change the game completely. Read about Synthorx and their work in the field here. Interview with Dr. David Asch on strategies for testing new ideas in health care quickly and efficiently. Title says it all, this is a good listen on the way to work. I'll admit, I'm biased when it comes to content regarding collaboration in healthcare... so it's an important topic. Zombie Start-Ups and Vulture Capital Drew Boston, Marc Warren - Accenture Some fighting words from Accenture's Drew Boston and Marc Warren: half of the digital health start ups funded between 2008 and 2013 won't last more than 20 months (although not a crazy number when you think that 3/4 of start ups will fail). Private equity investment in healthcare: 15 healthcare investment niches — A review of key sectors for 2015 A review of kew trends in health care funding and private equity.
