Startup Highlight: Quanterix

Quanterix has some impressive diagnostic technology that allows it "to trap single molecules in femtoliter-sized wells, allowing for a "digital" readout of each individual bead to determine if it is bound to the target analyte or not." For example the technology can enable clinicians to detect small amounts of proteins in concussion victims, even if the concussion is very minimal. Obviously, the applications go well beyond this...

Two Companies Close In on a Concussion Blood Test

Blood tests have always been an important part of medicine, and they are only growing in importance as genetics and precision medicine evolve. Quanterix and Banyan Biomarkers are applying their technologies for understanding Traumatic Brain Injuries and Concussions to take us away from more rudimentary tests.

For Medical Tech Startups, FDA Approval Is Crucial

This may seem like a very obvious point. But with the proliferation of digital health apps, any startups don't need to worry about the FDA. The regulatory body is still important, and can provide much needed differentiation even in a space where their approval isn't required.

LA Dodgers Accelerator includes two digital health startups

You know things are frothy when a sports franchise starts an Accelerator. At least they are fostering a couple Digital Health companies...

How Doctors Use Viruses to Kill Cancer

"As early as the turn of the twentieth century, it's been suspected that viruses could hold the key for curing cancer. Prostitutes being treated simultaneously for rabies and cervical cancer showed a marked reduction in their tumors after administration of the rabies vaccine. The issue lies in protecting patients with already compromised immune systems from falling victim to hyper-doses of lethal viruses."

The First Real Smart Drug? Researchers Say Modafinil Works

"A study published this week, however, makes bold claims on the properties of one of the most well-known smart drugs: modafinil. Modafinil is a medication prescribed for sleep conditions such as narcolepsy, but students, execs, and hacker types have documented taking the drug even when they're sleeping just fine—and getting brain enhancing effects as a result."

16 Startup Metrics

Jeff Jordan, Anu Hariharan, Frank Chen, and Preethi Kasireddy

"Lifetime value is the present value of the future net profit from the customer over the duration of the relationship. It helps determine the long-term value of the customer and how much net value you generate per customer after accounting for customer acquisition costs ."

Projects and Companies

Sam Altman

"When you're working on a project, you can experiment with ideas for a long time.  When you have a company, the clock is ticking and people expect results.  This gets to the danger with projects—a lot of people use them as an excuse to not work very hard.  If you don't have the self-discipline to work hard without external pressure, projects can be a license to slack off."

What I've Learned About Venture Funding

Mark Suster

"Money when you find product / market fit is an extreme differentiator
And now irony sets in and I do a head check on the chart above. I know in my bones that there is a magic moment where capital plays a hugely differentiating role. As in back-up-the-truck, load on $20-30 million and let me blast the market with all I've got."

Tech Winter Maybe Coming

Alex Iskold

"Raise capital when you can. Raise a little more capital, if offered. We consistently see how difficult it is to get from series seed to series A. Having a little more capital at your disposal, even at the expense of some incremental dilution might be prudent, especially in the upcoming cycle."

Startup Reading List

August 21, 2015

If you are a fan of Disney/Pixar's move "Up", you will undoubtedly remember Doug the adorable dog with a low attention span who frequently distracted. Couldn't help but think of this when we were approached to feature a blog post by Saent, a company that builds a physical product to help you focus.

They asked us to feature their blog post on their plan to use crowdfunding to promote their product. We hesitated as we wanted to see if their plan worked before featuring. They also sent us an blog post on their mid-campaign progress. We said no.

It was us who asked to hear how things went recently and of course they had a blog post ready... discussing how difficult it had been to meet their goal. It reminds us how well a plan holds up to reality and how a team recovers.

Check out their story and others in this week's digest.

Product Person's Perspective on Enterprise Selling

Steven Sinofsky

"Much of the early effort will be consumed by understanding if you're even working with the right team or people within an organization, and often there are multiple parties. Too often a product person believes you start at the CEO and shortcut this step, but an experienced account manager knows great deals can die in the middle of an organization just as easily at the top."

3 Key Elements of Every Good Consumer Marketplace

Mahesh Vellanki

"I believe that there are just three overarching characteristics – 1) a good hook, 2) provider liquidity, and 3) building 2-sided stickiness."

The World's Most Valuable Commodity: Time

T. Brad Kielinski

"You will get to a certain level of understanding time. It can and will get crazy. Understand what you are willing to sacrifice vs. accomplish and plan accordingly."

The Product Hunt Bounce

Tim Metz

"We didn't pick the $100k goal because we like the sound of that number; it's based on a calculation of costs, the most important one being the minimum order we have to place with our manufacturer in Shenzhen (China)."

Startup Highlight: Ixchel Scientific

YC Demo Day was this week, and there were a surprising number of health care companies. In my mind, the coolest by far was Ixchel, which promises to predict how drugs will react in the human body (specifically for cancer drugs). Many companies are attacking the space (read about the Flatiron/Guardant Health Partnership here), but I'll be excited to see the progress Ixchel makes in the field. It could mean billions in savings around R&D spend.

Inside Illumina's Plans to Lure Consumers with an App Store for Genomes

Genetic testing is obviously blowing up, and Illumina is making a big bet with Helix on creating a "pay-as-you-go" model for gene sequencing to lower costs even further. Check out the full review.

On Digital Healthcare Series

Jonathan Libov & Angela Tran Kingyens - On Digital Healthcare

Jonathan Libov of USV and Angela Tran King of Version One are coming together to do a 6 part series on digital health. The first two parts are already up, and I was impressed with their Mobile Endpoints piece. I'm sure I'll be putting these up each week as they expand the series.

The age of the red pen

And this week in CRISPR coverage... the Economist had a long overview of the technique, its implications, and companies chasing its power. Much of this probably won't be news to folks, but it's worth a read.

A Startup Is Pushing the Boundaries of Biology with Synthetic DNA

People were super excited about 3D printed drugs... but synthetic DNA has the potential to change the game completely. Read about Synthorx and their work in the field here.

Interview with Dr. David Asch on strategies for testing new ideas in health care quickly and efficiently.

Title says it all, this is a good listen on the way to work. I'll admit, I'm biased when it comes to content regarding collaboration in healthcare... so it's an important topic.

Zombie Start-Ups and Vulture Capital

Drew Boston, Marc Warren - Accenture

Some fighting words from Accenture's Drew Boston and Marc Warren: half of the digital health start ups funded between 2008 and 2013 won't last more than 20 months (although not a crazy number when you think that 3/4 of start ups will fail).

Private equity investment in healthcare: 15 healthcare investment niches — A review of key sectors for 2015
