Health Reading List | June 19, 2015 | Happy Friday,
As I'm sure everyone knows, Fitbit had a rip-roaring IPO yesterday, and closed up almost 50%. In light of this, I decided to focus this issue on wearables, and partially why I think Fitbit is going to flop. So there is a mix of older studies and articles in here with some more recent analysis on Fitbit in particular.
Enjoy and have a stupendous weekend,
Scott
Startup Highlight: Preventice
I tend to agree with Julie Papanek and try to evaluate the value of a wearable by the potential of its clinical endpoints (and its ability to meet those endpoints). Preventice, unlike some of it's less clinically relevant counterparts, fulfills this goal by giving physicians real-time physiological data and specifically clinically accurate cardiac monitoring.

This is a great overview of her thoughts on what she looks for in wearable tech, and I think it cuts through a lot of the BS and gets to what's important. | | Dan Ledger, Principal, Endeavour Partners Daniel McCa!rey, Behavioral Scientist & Product Manager, SyncStrength - Endeavor Partners This was one of the original studies that really called into question the validity around the hype for wearables. With one third of users discontinuing use after 6 months, firms like Fitbit really have a far way to go to prove long term value in my mind. | | PwC "In summer 2014, PwC's Health Research Institute and Consumer Intelligence Series launched research to better understand consumers' attitudes and behaviors toward wearable technology amid rapid growth in the health industry." | | Malay Gandhi - Rock Health Malay Gandhi came out with a great deconstruction of the Fitbit S-1 last month. It's a bit too positive for my liking, but does point out the significant "negative churn" that exists for Fitbit, which is a huge question mark for me.
