Startup Reading List - Startup Digest - Innovation! - June 26th - July 3rd

Startup Reading List

June 26, 2015

Last week we asked you if you had an opinion on what innovation means. Below are some of our favorite reader submissions and our comments, too.

"My take on the word: Innovation is looking at successful systems across the board, taking the pieces apart, and putting them back together in a way that nobody has ever done in a given market or context." Ben @ViableBen

"Innovation means creating something better. A better product, process or person. It isn't necessarily about introducing new technology as much as it is about changing human behavior." Dave @davmundy

"Innovation: Creating something new that users love." Sebastian @sgreiss

Thanks for your definition on one of today's most trendy and overused words, innovation. Almost every enterprise claims to be innovative. Inherently this means changing the way they currently do things. This can require cannibalizing sales, retraining or letting go of staff, giving up on "cash cows". It's easy to say you are innovative, much harder to put it into practice. Successful startups are innovative by default because they have nothing to compromise. They are starting from scratch. Enterprises have a more painful path to follow to become or remain innovative.

Enjoy this week's articles and have a great weekend.

What Happens When You Stop Relying On Resumes

Aline Lerner

"While AJ's government work experience gave him a good amount of cred in the public sector, he found that making the move to industry, and startups especially, was near impossible. It wasn't that he was blowing interviews. He just couldn't get through the filter in the first place."

Building a Growth Model for Your Company

Chris McCann

"Magic Moment — the one compelling experience that creates an initial emotional response that your customers or users first experience when using your product."

Why Successful People Focus on the Bottom End of the Funnel

Mark Suster

"We all know the type of person who lives in the top end of the funnel. They are the "shiny object chasers" who love to go to conferences, talk about "blue sky ideas" about what is possible and set vision for others to execute."

Profits vs Growth

Fred Wilson

"Meaning you can grow at 100% per year and have operating margins of -60%. Or you can have flat growth and have 40% operating margins. Or you can grow at 20% per year and have 20% operating margins. There is no magic to the forty percent target, but I do like establishing some relationship between acceptable levels of profitability (or losses) and growth."

Health Reading List - Startup Digest - SCOTUS ACA Ruling - June 26th - July 3rd

Startup Digest Startup Digest Startup Digest

Health Reading List

June 26, 2015

Hello hello,

SCOTUS finally handed down the much anticipated King vs. Burwell ruling, and no surprises: the challenge was rejected. There are a few analyses this week on what that means for insurance companies (the real winners) and health entrepreneurs.

Have a great one,

Scott

Startup Highlight: CRISPR Therapeutics

CRISPR has been around for some time, and now a few startups are popping up around the world altering technique. CRISPR Therapeutics is one of them.

"CRISPR Therapeutics is a biopharmaceutical company created to translate CRISPR-Cas9, a breakthrough genome-editing technology, into transformative medicines for serious human diseases. We are uniquely positioned to translate CRISPR-Cas9 technology into human therapeutics, thanks to our multi-disciplinary team of world-renowned academics, clinicians and drug developers. CRISPR Therapeutics' vision is to cure serious human diseases at the molecular level using CRISPR-Cas9."

The Supreme Court's Obamacare Decision Is Already Worth $3 Billion For Insurers

Leah Libresco - Five Thirty Eight

"That rise amounted to a $3 billion increase in the combined market capitalization of the five companies. And that figure underestimates the decision's real benefit to these companies. According to FantasySCOTUS, a prediction market that has been fairly successful at forecasting the outcome of Supreme Court decisions, the government was favored to prevail in its case. Assuming investors were similarly optimistic about the government's chances, the pre-decision stock prices likely reflected the predicted outcome, meaning the bounce started from higher up than it might have otherwise."

The SCOTUS Ruling In Favor Of The Affordable Care Act Is A Big Win For Health Innovators

Unity Stokes - Forbes

Rather than focusing on the uninsured or the insurance companies themselves, Unity Stokes focuses on the disruption in the industry that the ACA has caused, and the opportunity that exists (and will continue to exist) because of the legislation.

Affordable Care Act: Up Next for Health Reform

PwC

PwC has a great update to its ongoing ACA coverage with many many juicy stats. A good primer to review the current and far-reaching implications of the ACA implementation.

A Chip That Mimics Human Organs is the Design of the Year

Liz Stinson - Wired

"Called Organs-On-Chips, it's exactly what it sounds like: A microchip embedded with hollow microfluidic tubes that are lined with human cells, through which air, nutrients, blood and infection-causing bacteria could be pumped. These chips get manufactured the same way companies like Intel make the brains of a computer. But instead of moving electrons through silicon, these chips push minute quantities of chemicals past cells from lungs, intestines, livers, kidneys and hearts."

Editing the Software of Life, for Fame and Fortune

Jennifer Doudna, PhD - Medium

Jennifer Doudna is awesome, and CRISPR is the stuff of Sci-Fi. So why not read an article written by her on the topic?

Seven Questions for Personalized Medicine

Michael J. Joyner, MD, Nigel Paneth, MD, MPH - JAMA

Precision Medicine has some great promise, but many questions remain on it's impact (both financial and otherwise). JAMA has a great overview here.

Tech companies see market opportunity in healthcare innovation

Aaron Stanley - Financial Times

FT's article on innovation in healthcare is a good complement to Unity Stokes' piece, and a definite must read.

Health Reading List - Startup Digest - Fitbit IPO - June 19th - June 26th

Startup Digest Startup Digest Startup Digest

Health Reading List

June 19, 2015

Happy Friday,

As I'm sure everyone knows, Fitbit had a rip-roaring IPO yesterday, and closed up almost 50%. In light of this, I decided to focus this issue on wearables, and partially why I think Fitbit is going to flop. So there is a mix of older studies and articles in here with some more recent analysis on Fitbit in particular.

Enjoy and have a stupendous weekend,

Scott

Startup Highlight: Preventice

I tend to agree with Julie Papanek and try to evaluate the value of a wearable by the potential of its clinical endpoints (and its ability to meet those endpoints). Preventice, unlike some of it's less clinically relevant counterparts, fulfills this goal by giving physicians real-time physiological data and specifically clinically accurate cardiac monitoring.

As always, if you come across news, announcements, videos, or podcasts that you think everyone else would benefit from, e-mail me at scott.munro@startupdigestmail.com or tweet @R_Scott_Munro.

How Wearable Startups Can Win Big In The Medical Industry

Julie Papanek - TechCrunch

I am a huge fan of Julie Papanek and think she is one of the more intelligent VCs around digital health out there today. This is a great overview of her thoughts on what she looks for in wearable tech, and I think it cuts through a lot of the BS and gets to what's important.

How the Science of Human Behavior Change O!ers the Secret to Long-Term Engagement

Dan Ledger, Principal, Endeavour Partners Daniel McCa!rey, Behavioral Scientist & Product Manager, SyncStrength - Endeavor Partners

This was one of the original studies that really called into question the validity around the hype for wearables. With one third of users discontinuing use after 6 months, firms like Fitbit really have a far way to go to prove long term value in my mind.

Health Wearables: Early Days

PwC

"In summer 2014, PwC's Health Research Institute and Consumer Intelligence Series launched research to better understand consumers' attitudes and behaviors toward wearable technology amid rapid growth in the health industry."

Deconstructing the Fitbit S-1

Malay Gandhi - Rock Health

Malay Gandhi came out with a great deconstruction of the Fitbit S-1 last month. It's a bit too positive for my liking, but does point out the significant "negative churn" that exists for Fitbit, which is a huge question mark for me.

The company telegraphed its interest in increasing Apple Watch FaceTime functionality during the rollout of watchOS 2.0 at the Worldwide Developers Conference earlier this month."

Fitbit CEO scores $600.6M in stock deal

USA Today Money

"Fitbit CEO James Park owned 20.0 million shares of Fitbit going into the initial public offering. At the $30 a share price, that means Park's holdings translate into $600.6 million. And don't think this is just paper wealth. Park actually sold 767,785 shares in the offering, hauling in $23 million right off the bat."

Tech Crunch

"The new format is meant to allow programmers to compile their code for the browser (currently the focus is on C/C++, with other languages to follow), where it is then executed inside the JavaScript engine. Instead of having to parse the full code, though, which can often take quite a while (especially on mobile), WebAssembly can be decoded significantly faster"

Empathy and Product Development

Albert Wenger

"One good definition of empathy is "experiencing emotions that match another person's emotions." Or put differently, the way to "measure user frustration" (where frustration is clearly an emotion) is to experience that emotion oneself."

New Data Shows Losing 80% of Mobile Users is Normal

Andrew Chen

The Babe Ruth Effect in Venture Capital

Chris Dixon

"The Babe Ruth effect is hard to internalize because people are generally predisposed to avoid losses. Behavioral economists have famously demonstrated that people feel a lot worse about losses of a given size than they feel good about gains of the same size. Losing money feels bad, even if it is part of an investment strategy that succeeds in aggregate."
