An Open Letter to YC Founders on Demo Day Eve

Startup Jackson

"I OH a YC founder at a cafe last week talking about raising $500k on $10M. While $500k may be enough to make progress, if you're raising above $10M in the A round, you'll probably need some decent metrics. If you can get there in $500k you are an outlier. This company is probably fucking up."

How to Scale Your Company Culture

Alexa Meyer

"One way we support introspection is through a weekly activity called Anxious/Excited, where we all get together to share the things we're anxious about (work-related or otherwise), along with the things we're excited about."

"As CEO, I spend a lot of my time talking to people about our company and telling the story of what we're building and where we're going."

Startup Reading List - Startup Digest - Another week, another digest - March 20th - March 27th

Startup Digest Startup Digest Startup Digest

Startup Reading List

March 20, 2015

Is it possible to favor one of our weekly editions over another? Of course it is. Is this the best digest ever? Based on all the digests we have ever sent, statistically that would be unlikely.

However, this digest is pretty good. Read, do, measure, repeat.

Much love,

Your curating team

Startup Lessons I Wish I Knew...

Zaid Zawaideh

"What's worse than having to throw three weeks of work on a feature? Working a few more weeks on it to find out that no one cares about it, or that it is confusing your customers."

Your Most Important Skill: Empathy

"I spend much more time and much more effort learning how to understand the people around me than I do code, systems, architectures, and technologies. I'm not an expert or even remarkable at it, but I work on it consciously and consistently. The it I'm describing here is called "empathy"."

How to Become a Rock Star for $290

Brett Goldstein

"Sounds complicated, but the idea was simple: send my crappy iPhone recording to a bunch of amazing musicians scattered across the globe and hope they can independently record their respective parts on top of it so that in the end, the song sounds halfway decent."

Prototyping Tools and Process

Chris McCann

"The design industry is undergoing a huge transformation — we are seeing more prototyping tools than ever before. 3D Printing Reading List - Startup Digest - March 20th - March 27th

Startup Digest Startup Digest Startup Digest

3D Printing Reading List

March 20, 2015

If you're joining us for the first time, here's a quick recap of what we do. Welcome to the 3D Printing Reading List for Startup Digest. Each week, you'll get top stories in the 3D printing industry, plus some analysis from me (Shashi) and John.

What consumer product could benefit from the 3D printing's design freedom and customization?  One Chinese company believes it has found the perfect candidate- wedding dresses, specifically complex, lacy designs.  Ever printed something and found the result was FAR different than the pictures suggested?  TwiddlePic provides an advanced "3D print preview" that will show you exactly how a model will print.  Last, if you've ever wondered how to teach 3D printing or where to start learning, we suggest taking a look at TinkerineU, the new education portal with curriculum anyone can use.

This week has been GREAT for commercial 3D printing. We start with a critical look at how commercial printers perform against desktop printers. You might be surprised with the results!  Next up, Boeing has filed a portfolio of patents encompassing a range of 3D printed parts and processes for generating spare parts. Spare parts that they are actually flying- today!  Last up, and perhaps most significant, #startup Carbon3D has announced a new technology called CLIP that promises to make 3D printing 25-100x faster at even higher resolution. Interested in learning how CLIP works? Read the article and visit this Reddit thread for a deeper dive into the patent behind this tech. We live in amazing times.

Enjoy- we'll see you same time next week!

Boeing files patent for 3D-printed aircraft parts — and yes, it's already using them

3D Printer Shootout - $600 Printrbot vs. $20,000 uPrint SE Plus

One 3D model, two printers - a big professional 3D printer vs. a tiny desktop. Which prints better? We seek to find out.

25-100 times faster: #Startup Carbon 3D Announces Revolutionary 3D-printing technology

Carbon 3D, the relatively unknown California-based start-up behind the marvel, has pioneered the technique, which it calls Continuous Liquid Interface Production (CLIP). It uses lasers and oxygen in a way that slows down and allows the formed photosensitive resin to cure. This allows the printing to occur in three dimensions at once.

TwiddlePic Launches to Make Sharing and Viewing 3D Printed Objects Online More Realistic

Currently there are sites on the internet which allow us to view renderings in 3D, but this doesn't mean that the 3D printed object that is fabricated, based on this design, will turn out the same. This is where a new website called TwiddlePic comes into play.
